Titre : Correlating process parameters with hexavalent chromium level in leather Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Dipankar Chaudhuri, Auteur ; Sanjib Mondal, Auteur Année de publication : 2001 Article en page(s) : p. 461-466 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Three important process parameters, namely, degree of neutralization, intensity of acidification towards the end of fatliquoring, and the degree of exposure to sunlight during drying have been studied to assess their influence on the Cr(VI) level detected in leather. Wet-blue cow-hide pieces have therefore been neutralized to different extent by using sodium bicarbonate, fatliquored, and acidified to different pH values ranging from 3.5 to 7.3, and dried under varying conditions. While some of the leather pieces have been dried in direct sunlight, others have been dried either in diffuse sunlight or in the dark. The Cr(VI) levels in all these leathers have been determined spectrophotometrically. The results clearly indicate that all three parameters studied here strongly influence the Cr(VI) level detected in leather. Tannage Résumé : Some commonly understood and generally accepted aspects of the chrome tanning reaction are analysed, with a view to correcting misapprehensions. They are: chromium(III) as a solo tannage, the role of sulphate in the chrome tanning mechanism, the size and shape of the chrome species, basicity of bound chrome, crosslinking, reaction sites on collagen, the roles of pH and temperature, reactivity at high basicity, the role of ethanolamine, the masking reaction, multidentate masking, the roles of masking agents, the stability of chrome tanned leather, semi chrome leather. Stilwell, Auteur ; Mark W. Armstrong, Auteur ; Jean J. Tancous, Auteur ; L. Shepley Hermann, Auteur ; W. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Tanners of vegetable tanned leather have observed that when iron contacts moist or wet leather it causes gray to black stains. For years, the chelating agent, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), has been added to dry tannin extracts and to tanning liquors to prevent iron stains. This study was conducted to find out how much iron is present in tannins and in tan liquors and to find out how much iron, in the absence of EDTA, would be needed to cause iron stains. Analytical analyses and color determinations, using sheepskin skivers and colorimetry, showed that EDTA, an expensive chemical, did not need to be added during tanning and retanning of vegetable tanned leather.
