Tannage Résumé : Between the beginning of the tanning of the skins and the delivery of finished leather articles, there is a series of operations that produce a significant quantity of waste. Unfortunately, this waste is only very little reused. Environmental concerns and escalating landfill costs have prompted environmentalists, scientists and research people to look for ways to convert this waste material into more valuable co-products. The objectives of this study are to: evaluate the quantity of wastes generated by the operations involved in the transformation of hides into leather, and revalue the most significant category of tanned wastes, namely chrome shavings and tanned splits. The quantitative study of solid waste showed that the tanning industry produces a high percentage of waste (about 38 percent of the weight of salted hides). The alkaline digestion of tanned waste with calcium hydroxide allows the separation of the proteins and the metallic salts. The proteins are in the aqueous phase and the metallic salts in the solid phase. Solid proteins are recovered after lyophilization of the liquid. The solid residue is incinerated under precise conditions of temperature with a large initial exess of oxygen in order to oxidize the trivalent chromium and transform them into hexavalent state. The dissolution of recovered ash by a dilute solution of nitric acid allows regeneration of a concentrated bichromate solution whose chromium is recovered in the form of solid yellow chromate by the reactions of complexation and precipitation using a solution of lead(II) nitrate. The crystal structure of the precipitate was identified by x-ray diffraction. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Leather made with combinations/blends of a Lubricating Acrylic Syntan (LAS) and an Acrylic Polyacid Syntan, have shown unexpected and marked improvement in its water repellence and strength versus the separate use of the syntans alone. The upgraded performance of leather has been attributed to a beneficial synergy between the LAS and the Polyacid. This paper addresses and discusses the chemical properties of the Acrylic Polyacid Syntans that affect the observed performance synergy. These properties embody the nature of the polyacid, its molecular weight and the extent of neutralization with a strong base. Blends of Lubricating Acrylic Syntans and Polyacids have the potential to become commercial products that will also simplify and streamline retanning operations. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The effects of the composition of vinyl polymer tannages on the physical properties of leather have been systematically studied with a statistical two-power regression orthogonal design1. Fracture energy was measured along with tensile strength, elongation and tensile modulus for a wide variety of syntan treated pigskin leathers. Eight monomers: acrylonitrile (AN) , acrylamide (AM), methyl acrylic acid (MAA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), vinyl acetate (VAc), methyl acrylate (MA), ethyl acrylate (EA), and butyl acrylate (BA) were chosen respectively to copolymerize with acrylic acid (AA) to form the corresponding copolymers. Tests showed the excellent physical properties of leather treated by the hexa-copolymer composed of AA, AN, AM, MMA, VAc and EA. After performing the retanning application test by using these copolymers as tannages, the physical properties of the retanned leather samples, such as tensile strength, elongation at break, toughness (fracture energy), and stiffness (Young's modulus ) were measured. The results showed the comonomer ratio of vinyl polymer tannages can greatly affect the physical properties of leather. If the comonomer ratio of the hexa-copolymer composed of AA, AN, AM, MMA, VAc and EA is optimized, the hexa-copolymer tannages can offer significant improvements in the tensile strength, elongation at break, toughness (fracture energy), and softness of the leather samples.
