It is very essential that Bases so manufactured should have almost the same property in all the batches or else the tinted bases will show shade variation from batch to batch. This is not at all desirable as it will create a chaos in the market. Such variations will not be accepted by the dealers and Painters/applicators as shade variation in one wall will spoil the aesthetic appeal and will lead to customer rejection. The manufacturer may lose h is creditability and good will. In order to avoid this there are quite few precautions which are to be observed so that bases manufactured are without any variation, post tinting. The following broad precautions can be listed. Standardisation is a process by which the bases are to be matched with any reference sample along with some specified tests which are usually followed in the industry. This is a very important step after the bases are made. Unless standardisation is done the bases cannot be tinted as one may get a Iighter shade or darker shade or the shade after tinting is no way near to the colour card. It must be understood clearly that the colour and strength are controlled to the system standard and to which colorants are added to get desired colour. Tinting bases are white, clear and coloured for the water-based eecorative paints. In other words Standardisation of Bases has to be done first in R&D & then in production. Standardisation means properties such as weight/litre, viscosity, reducing strength, colour difference (DE), opacity, gloss, full volumes etc has to be defined with their acceptance range in the specification of each base and then approve each batch of base as per the specifications. Small changes in these variables, which include the latex, thickener, and surfactant components of the coating, can have a profound effect. Many previous studies have focused on understanding and controlling these sensitivities. However, few studies have focused on the relatively large viscosity drop and related problems when predispersed colorants are added to tint bases formulated with associative thickeners. In this study, pastel and deep-tone tint bases were formulated with associative and nonassociative thickeners. The tint bases were then tinted with six different conventional colorant dispersions and six low-VOC counterparts of the same colorants. Effects of the colorants, thickeners, and VOCs on viscosity profiles, dynamic viscoelastic properties, color development, and gloss were determined and results are presented.
