As the wastes are highly proteinaceous, a wide range of value added products could be retrieved making the leather industry an integrated business with value creation opportunities. These are described in this progress review. Tannage Résumé : The sludge biomass, composed largely of organic matter 60-90%(W/V), is contained within the cell wall membranes of microbial cells. It was found that the pressure pulses produced by an ultrasonic homogeniser significantlyinfluenced the degree of disintegration of the cells containing the waste. The mechanical sludge disintegration was investigated with an ultrasonic homogeniser operated at a frequency of 20 kHz with different energy intensities. The influence of sludge solids content on the disintegration of the sludge also was investigated. It was found that the influence of mechanical disintegration on particle size cannot fully describe the release of organic material into the sludge water. The release of organic material into the sludge water can best be estimated by the chemical oxygen demand (COD) and by protein release. The degree of disintegration, as indicated by COD and protein release, increased significantly when the energy intensity applied with the ultrasonic homogenizer was increased. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The influence of different factors on the waterproofing capacity of retanning-fatliquoring polymers was studied in an earlier work. In the present paper, given that the production of waterproofed leather articles requiresthe use of different retanning agents, the effect of these agents on water-repellency is evaluated. The variation of water repellency with time is also studied. It has been confirmed that the retanning agent plays an important role in the final degree of water repellency. Different retanning agents yielded varying water repellency rates. Time increased the waterproofing properties of the leather. However, the water-repellency values became uniform after subjecting the leather to a temperature of 80 °C in an oven for 48 hours. Titre : Biokinetics and toxicity assessment of tannery wastewater using batch reactor system Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : R. A. Ramanujam, Auteur ; M. Mariappan, Auteur ; R. Ganesh, Auteur Année de publication : 2004 Article en page(s) : p. 468-473 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The design of an activated sludge process involves the establishment of fundamental reaction kinetics using batch laboratory scale biological oxidation system and integration of the batch kinetics with mixing theory to predict the performance of a continuous process. Batch tests can be used successfully for the determination of kinetic parameters and toxicity of wastewater. The results obtained in the present study show that pre-treated tannery wastewater is not toxic to microorganisms. The design criteria evolved using the batch study were loading rate (0.09 BOD/mixed liquor volatile suspended solids) and hydraulic retention time (> 24 hours) for meeting the effluent BOD standard. These design values suggest that the extended aeration system is the most appropriate activated sludge treatment method for tannery wastewater. The half-velocity constant (Ks) evaluated was in the range 245 - 312 mg/l on BOD basis and 963-1138 mg/l on COD basis. Ks defines the substrate uptake characteristics. The relatively higher value of Ks for tannery wastewater compared to domestic wastewater indicates that substrate removal is slower and hence longer retention time is required for complete biodegradation of tannery wastewater. The regression analysis of the batch experimental data in a coordinate system InS/S0 versus tXa for the determination of specific rate constant (KE) resulted in a satisfactory correlation coefficient (r = 0.99). Estimating biokinetic constants for tannery wastewater according to a first order reaction using a batch reactor was satisfactory.
