In the present investigation, an attempt has been made to develop a reliable objective method for the assessment of levelness based on instrumental techniques. Three methods based on Mean Delta ECIE (color difference based on method of Commission International de I'Eclairage), Mean Delta ECMC (color difference based on method of Color Measurement Committee of the Society of Dyers and Colorists, U.K) and Relative Unlevelness Index (RUI) were screened for use on leather substrate and compared with the visual assessment method. The study was carried out for 13 shades on goat upper leathers. Results show that the method based on Mean Delta ECMC is the most suitable for all the shades and has a good correlation with the visual assessment rating. Titre : Estimation of the thermal conductivity of leather Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Ewa Marcinkowska, Auteur Année de publication : 2004 Article en page(s) : p. 242-250 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A schematic diagram of an instrument based on the Fitch apparatus for evaluating the thermal conductivity of leather and other insulating materials such as rubber, textiles and cork used in footwear, is presented. A method for measuring the thermal conductivity under nonstationary conditions on that apparatus has been established. A nonlinear equation based on the differential heat balance is proposed for computing the thermal resistance. The balance includes the receiver heat losses. A method for instrument calibration and measuring uncertainty computation is also presented. The instrument prototype was used in preliminary tests. The statistical analysis of the results has indicated a good accuracy (trueness and precision) of the method. Titre : Nondestructive evaluation of leather based on acoustic emission Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Cheng-Kung Liu, Auteur ; Nicholas P. Latona, Auteur Année de publication : 2004 Article en page(s) : p. 251-257 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The physical testing of leather is currently a destructive process, wherein cutouts are taken off the tannery floor for mechanical testing. These destructive tests are not only time-consuming, but also wasteful of leather. Therefore there is great incentive to develop a nondestructive test that will drastically improve leather quality control. We recently examined the feasibility of using the acoustic emission (AE) technique to nondestructively measure the mechanical properties of leather, particularly tear strength and softness; both properties are critical for leather especially for upholstery and automobile applications. In this investigation, a rotational acoustic sensor was contacted with the leather samples to collect their AE quantities and properties. Observations showed an excellent correlation between the tear strength of leather and the corresponding acoustic counts, read from an acoustic emission analyzer. Data also indicated a close relationship between the softness of leather and the corresponding ratio of acoustic hits to energy. The observed phenomena implied that the tear strength and softness of leather can be nondestructively determined by measuring the acoustic quantities with a rotational sensor crossing over the leather to be tested. The results of this research have become the framework in designing an in-line nondestructive evaluation method for leather quality. Titre : Multidimensional analysis of magnesium oxide hydrolysis of wet-blue shavings Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Kalyani Martinelango, Auteur ; Dennis C. Shelly, Auteur Année de publication : 2004 Article en page(s) : p. 258-268 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Magnesium oxide (MgO) hydrolysis is an established route to the conversion of chrome tanned leather waste to gelatin, protein hydrolysate and chrome cake. The objective of this work is to develop a deeper insight into MgO hydrolysis and to provide a foundation for developing new strategies for exploiting the products. A molecular level characterization of these protein materials was sought through a multidimensional analytical approach. Separation techniques such as Isoelectric Focussing (IEF), Hydrophobic Interaction Chromatography (HIC) and Reversed Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (RPHPLC) were combined with Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). MALDI-TOF, itself, is a very useful analytical tool for characterizing large biomolecules such as oligopeptides and proteins. These analytical combinations proved useful in studying the product compositions of MgO hydrolysis. Generally, the hydrolysis produced many small, unremarkable peptides and relatively few larger fragments. Overall, there was good agreement among the molecular weight-based analytical techniques, across the separation and detection data domains. The very best analytical strategy would seem to be on-line coupling of RPHPLC and MS, providing high resolution, real-time speciation of these hydrolysis mixtures.
