Tannage Résumé : In this study, an industrial-scale tanning process to replace chrome tanning in the production of high quality bovine shoe upper leathers, based on a multi-step vegetable-aluminum tannage, is presented. Tara extract was used as vegetable tanning agent in order to obtain a wet-white tanned leather; a pretannage with glutaraldeyde or syntan was introduced to improve penetration. This paper reports the best recipes developed, the properties of the leather obtained and the results of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TG and DTG), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) used as investigation methods to follow the tanning process steps and better understand the cross-linking mechanisms. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Reduced dye penetration constitutes a problem in the dyeing process of thick hides. Liposomes have been successfully used as auxiliary products in wool dyeing as well as in sheepskin dyeing giving rise to dyeings of highlevelness and very soft leathers. In this work, the possible application of some liposomes as auxiliary products in the dyeing process of 2 mm hides has been studied. The effect of the liposome use on dye penetration, on dyeing levelness and on dye exhaustion has been compared with the influence exerted by other commercially available chemicals such as: a chemical based on a sodium salt of a condensed naphthalenesulfonic acid and a chemical based on an ethoxylated fatty amine. Two pro-liposome formulations, from different supplier, containing soybean phospholipids were considered. Some parameters were improved by the use of liposome formulations when compared with the results obtained with the other chemicals considered. Tannage Résumé : Development of newer tanning agents is necessary to overcome the ecological pressure arising from the present tanning methods. Research of such nature will also lead to the evolution of better tanning systems. In the present work, a tanning system based on the mixed metal complexes of chromium, zinc and silica have been prepared. The percentages of chrome, zinc and silica in the tanning system have been optimized based on the properties like hydrothermal stability, physical strength characteristics and percentage exhaustion of chromium. Tanning agents with various ligand environments have been prepared so as to obtain an effective combination for tanning. Hydrothermal stability of the leathers is about 95°C and the percentage exhaustion of chromium is about 90%. The strength and organoleptic properties of the leathers tanned with this new tanning system are on par with and/or better than the conventional chrome tanned system. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : The American Leather Chemists Association (ALCA) Standard Method for tannin analysis was developed to provide tanners with a way to monitor the relative strength of tan liquors in their process. Although it took full advantage of existing technology in the early 1900's, that method is very restrictive, laborious and time consuming. Advances in filtering technology allow modern researchers to process materials much more efficiently than in the past. Several filtration methodologies were incorporated into existing ALCA methods, and modifications were evaluated for time efficiency, effectiveness, and comparability to the Standard Methods. Direct determination of solids on undiluted tan liquor was evaluated against the Standard Method procedures.
