Tannage Résumé : Fraunhofer UMSICHT has developed a new chromium tanning process principle to reduce the chromium contaminated sewage water, to save tanning agents and to reduce the process time. The first part of the lecture, given by Manfred Renner, head of business unit, will give a survey of the new tanning principle. The compressed natural gas carbon dioxide is used instead of water for the pickling and the tanning process. The use of different pressure ranges gives the possibility to control the pH value without using chemicals. A free from water and free from salt pickle is possible. The use of chromium can be controlled precisely and it is possible to use only as much chromium as can be fixed in the collagenic matrix. The lecture will show results achieved with technical- and preindustrial scale (650 kg split weight per batch) high-pressure equipment.
Using carbon dioxide 14 million liters of chromium contaminated sewage water in the tanning process, 20 billion liters of sewage water to produce the tanning agents, 160 000 tons of chromium and 500 000 tons of salt could be saved regarding the worldwide market.
The second part of the lecture, given by Prof. Dr. Weidner, head of the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT, will focus on the strategy of how to enter the market. For the prospective customers it will give the opportunity to see if the technology fits their companies and their main OEM customers. Tannage Résumé : To obtain acceptable dry heat resistance of leather by using proper retanning agents, the effect of typical retanning agents on dry heat resistance was investigated. The results indicated that the leathers retanned by different retanning agents have varying dry heat resistance, and the dry heat resistance is not always positively correlated with hydrothermal stability. Heating leather at 150oC for 30 min in the dry state led to minor damage to the crosslinking of collagen fibers, such as destruction of hydrogen bonds or other weak crosslinks. The increase of water content in leather exhibits negative effect on the dry heat resistance. Therefore, it was observed that the retanning agent that has lower hydrophility lead to higher dry heat resistance of leather. In addition, it seems that the retanning agents with good filling property and thermal stability are effective in achieving high dry heat resistance of leather. Tannage Résumé : Hair waste is recognized as a solid waste generated after a hair-saving unhairing process in leather technology, and it is produced in large amounts in Buenos Aires province, Argentine. The present method for this solid waste is disposal, which is environmentally troublesome and costly for the tanneries. Biodegradation of hair waste by keratinolytic microorganisms represents an alternative for bioconversion of keratin waste. This paper reports the optimization of keratinases production by Purpureocillium lilacinum LPS # 876. Firstly, one factor-at-a-time method was used to investigate the effect of nitrogen-sources, metal ions concentration in the basal mineral medium, as well as, initial pH and temperature on enzyme production. Medium composition for the keratinases production by P. lilacinum was optimized using two statistical methods: Plackett-Burman design and central composite design -combined with response surface methodology- used to optimize three significant variables: initial pH, glucose and CaCl2. The optimal conditions were determined as 7.10 g l-1 of glucose; 0.0065 mg l-1 of CaCl2 and initial pH of 5.60; at this condition the maximum keratinase yield predicted was 26.7 U ml-1. The model validation showed that it described adequately the influence of glucose and calcium concentration and initial pH on enzyme production. Production of keratinases by P. lilacinum is a less-exploited field that might represent a novel and promising biotechnological application for this microorganism. This binder technology has been used commercially for years because it offers a distinct combination of high abrasion resistance, flexibility, and tactile performance benefits. However, recent market trends place higher emphasis on performance properties that are challenging for these traditional finishing systems to achieve. Such properties include: dirt pick-up and dye transfer resistance, cleanability after soiling, as well as UV, hydrolytic, and thermal stability. Topcoats featuring acrylic-based binders are increasingly competitive due to intrinsic soiling resistance and stability properties; however, replacing more than approximately 25% of the polyurethane-based resin with acrylic-based resin can result in a noticeable loss in abrasion resistance or toughness. The Dow Chemical Company has developed a novel acrylic binder technology designed to offer many of the same advantages of PUD binders, such as toughness, while retaining the enhanced soiling resistance and stability needed to address the stringent demands of today’s market. This paper describes the performance properties attributed to this new binder technology through a systematic validation process.
