Revêtements organiquesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : There is an increased demand for abrasive wear-resistant coatings that add durability to steel hydraulic structures, particularly for those subjected to flowing water with debris and alternate wet/dry cycles. These coating systems provide not only corrosion and chemical resistance, but also good erosion and abrasion resistance to the metallic surfaces, which are constantly exposed to flowing water containing sand particles and debris. Generally, vinyl-based coatings are used on hydraulic steel structures to protect them from corrosion and abrasion. However, due to the existence of high water force and debris, the coating is abraded at a faster rate leading to significant maintenance and repair costs. In this study, abrasive wear resistance of conventional vinyl-based coating systems currently used on lock and dam steel structures by U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been compared with polymer matrix composite coatings, fibrous polymer coatings, and ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE). Six coating systems were evaluated through two-body abrasion tests using a reciprocating abrader under dry and wet conditions. Furthermore, wettability of the coating systems and its effect on the wear rate under the presence of water was studied. In addition, scanning electron microscopy of the wear tracks on different coatings was conducted to study and identify their failure mechanisms. Based on the results, UHMWPE and polymer–ceramic composite coatings were found to perform significantly better than the conventional vinyl-based coatings. Simulation, Méthode deIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The gonioapparent lightness of a metallic paint system depends strongly on the 3D microstructure of the platelet-containing basecoat layer, and on the platelet roughness. Current optical models which are used to simulate the paint’s appearance, however, ignore the multi-scale and multi-dimensional microstructural features, which limits their predictive power. Here, we describe a hybrid, ray-wave optics model for metallic paints. This model incorporates the ray-optics of the 3D platelet microstructure and the wave effects that result from the surface roughness of the platelets. This model is used to link the roughness to the reflection lobes of the aluminum platelets, and to the gonioapparent lightness of the paint system. Predicted lightness values from our model matched, at most viewing angles, measurements from physical paint samples. This model can be used to explore the effect of platelet surface roughness on the lightness of the complete paint system and predict the appearance of paints with different platelet microstructures. ProfilométrieIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Cellulite occurs in females and is a common condition of altered connective tissue matrix and increased adipogenicity with visible dimples and orange-peel appearance on the skins surface. Whilst advancements in methods continue to help our understanding, attempts to correct the appearance of cellulite topically have yielded limited success. Various kinds of non-invasive body contouring methods such as whole body vibration have been reported with demonstrable visible improvements in the cellulite condition. The aim of this study was to evaluate volume reduction and improvement of the visible appearance of cellulite as judged both objectively (AEVA-HE phase-shift 3-D fringe projection, macrophotography image grading) and subjectively (questionnaires) after application of a hand-held localized vibrational device over 24-weeks. The study was conducted on 40 healthy female volunteers who were instructed how to use the device on defined areas of cellulite of the outside and rear of the thighs (iliotibial band, and over biceps femoris region respectively). The initial 12 weeks of continuous massage application of the study were followed by a 12 week phase in which volunteers were split into 2 subgroups – one for assessment of regression effects and one for continuous application effects. AEVA (skin surface volume) measurements of cellulite-related dimples correlated with questionnaires and visual image evaluation scoring, in that in the iliotibial region cellulite was significantly reduced at 12 weeks. In the regression subgroup cellulite returned to initial values soon after cessation of treatment, whereas in the continuous application subgroup, cellulite remained diminished. The effect of this device to reduce cellulite as observed in this study proves that continuous use of vibrational massage is beneficial to mitigate visible signs of cellulite. ProfilométrieIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The quality of finished leather is often deterrnined based on the grain characteristics or pattern. The grain characteristics of leathers vary according to the age of the animal, breed, gender, climate, animal husbandry practices and processing conditions. However, the assessment of the leather surface or grain characteristics is often subjective. In this study, the grain characteristics were determined using a profilometry technique. Profilometry, a metrological method, is essentially the measurement or assessment of surface texture which is interrelated with its friction and wear properties.
The aim of the study was to define and grade the leather surface based on a given scale as well as to analyse the affect of various leather-making operations, including tanning, on the grain texture of leather from species of different origine.
Hides (bovine) and skins (caprine) were subjected to various processing conditions, including deliberately extreme conditions, such as extended timing processes and a shrunken grain tannage. The topography of the grain surface was analysed using an optical profilometer ; with the 3-dimensional stitched scans produced verified by scanning electron microscopy.
The results demonstrate a technique that could be used in forensic, quality control and research contexte to provide tanners with an indication of the impact of the processing on the grain pattern of their leather.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XZqwwWJkGzgsf1wbY-Jmr8XJYJG284qc/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=27997
