Imaging offers detailed characterization of the heterogeneity and spatial organization of complex compositions. We have shown that FT-IR imaging can be useful adjunct to atomic force microscopy and capability of each instrument. This technique provides spatial localization of chemical features and the direct identification and spatial visualization of multi-component spatially separated samples at the microscopic scale. Using A-link 15 silane, low modulus and low viscosity prepolymers can be made at the NCO/OH ration of 1.3 to 1.5. Consequently, the sealants made from the SPUR prepolymers and a series of new aminosilanes ad adhesion promoters can achieve superior flexibility, excellent adhesion and low modulus that is particularly suitable for construction applications. ViscoélasticitéIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Fracture tests were conducted on bulk samples of a rubber-toughened epoxy that models the fracture behavior of commercial structural adhesives. The samples were loaded with a variety of loading histories. The histories were selected to examine the dependency of fracture energy on loading rate, loading level, time under load, and recovery after loading. The results suggest that unless the load levels are a substantial fraction of the failure load, the loading history has little effect, at least for the time scales studied here. When the loads are high, however, the time under load becomes important and produces significant increases in toughness. If the sample is unloaded and allowed to recover, some but all of the additional toughness is lost. These results are consistent with a viscoelastic toughening mechanism and can be qualitatively explained with sample crack-tip blunting model. Réticulation (polymérisation)Index. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Some useful benefits of formulating higher performing urethane adhesives by addition of polyaziridine have been demonstrated. The data presented shows polyaziridines can be a cost-effective crosslinker for improving the adhesive performance of water urethanes. As little as 0.08 eqs. or 0.5 percent versus solids were found to have a significant if not optimal effect on resistance properties. Another advantage of polyaziridine-based formulations is the extended pot life one can apparently obtain that can provide further application flexibility. The addition of polyaziridines has also been demon-strated to provide improved adhesion on certain substrates, particularly SMA. Of course, when one is formulating adhesives for a particular application, optimal combinations of cross-linker, polymer and other addi¬tives will need to be determined as they may be expected to be interdependent.
As previously mentioned, further investi-gations are underway to elucidate whether unexpected low levels of polyaziridine addi
tion to waterborne urethanes are typically/universally required for optimal performance in adhesive applications.
