Résumé : |
The initiator plays a dominant role in the free radical synthesis of acrylic based coating resins. Both the chemical nature of the initiator and the polymerization conditions greatly influence the efficiency of the polymerization and the final resin properties. The effect was examined of change in side chain group in azo initiator with replacement of nitrile group to isobutyrate group with no major change in initiator half-life temperature, on the viscosity, solubility and MWD of acrylic resins produced by solution polymerization using them. Best solution in wide range of solvents, ranging from aromatic - ester - aliphatic solvent class, was achieved with 2,2'-azobis(methyl isobutyrate) v/s selected azonitrile initiators and its versatility was seen for preparing a range of resins with low MW, narrow polydispersity, low viscosity and reduced volatiles. Work was also reported on comparing the azo initiator efficiency og 2,2'-azobis ( methyl-isobutyrate) v/s alkyl perester initiator, tert-butyl perbenzoate and tert-butyl perisononanoate. Weathering performance of acrylic/isocyanate clear coasts using resins prepared with some of the initiators is reported. |
