Since then, the standard has gone unchanged despite many of the advances in weathering testing over the past decade.
In order to better predict how high-performance materials will perform outdoors, a revision of this standard is imperative. Technological advances in the performance of weathering testers, control of conditions and general understanding of the mechanisms of weathering can be applied to make SAE J2527 a better test method. These changes do not make the standard more restrictive and anyone with a Xenon-Arc chamber capable of meeting this test method, such as the Q-SUN Xe-3-HBS from Q-Lab Corporation, will still be able to run this test.
A recent ballot has revised this standard, implementing some changes to reflect these new advances.Note de contenu : - Removal of remaining hardware-specific language

Apart from protection of vehicle from weathering influences and mechanical impacts, aesthetic appearance is now a major criteria for the automobiles manufacturers. In th is review, the study of the possible effect of intercoat diffusion between basecoat and clear coat on appearance of coating is examined. The effect on aesthetic values such as gloss, haze, distinction of image, specular reflectance, and orange peel is studied, with variation of clear coat thickness on a metallic basecoat. Also the effect on orientation of aluminum flakes and flop index and other measurable attributes studied under the influence of clear coat.
The study indicates that clearcoat thickness has no influence on orientation distribution and flop index, but affects the aesthetic values, related to appearance of coating.Note de contenu : - APPEARANCE : Orientation of aluminum flakes (gloss - orange peel)

However, if urethane coatings are not properly cured, the vinyl films may delaminate due to the evolution of gases within the coatings. In this study, the influence of curing temperature and time on the extent of delamination observed for several vinyl films having various degrees of permeability was examined. Using a newly developed «photoacoustic umbrella» Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (PA FTIR) technique, CO2 has been identified as the gas responsible for the delamination of the graphics films. The mechanism of CO2 production and its relationship to the curing conditions are also discussed. Note de contenu : - Coating preparation

Système de pulvérisation (technologie)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : This research investigated the effects of basecoat (BC) bell application parameters on the appearance of automotive vehicles. A full factorial two-level DOE matrix was created to test the impact of four BC bell zone variables on appearance: flow rate, shaping air, voltage, and bell speed. Paint age was a covariate in the analysis. Panels were sprayed with waterborne BC followed by solventborne clearcoat and cured vertically at 144°C. The appearance was characterized by measuring the DOI, surface waviness, and multiangle color. Flow rate, bell speed, and shaping air were found to have the most impact on surface waviness. In addition, four interactive effects were also found to be significant. Three of these interactive effects included flow rate in combination with the other parameters. The results of this study indicate that particle size and fluid atomization play a key role in paint appearance. Decreasing the flow rate and/or increasing bell speed lead to a smoother finish, but are also correlated to a darker appearance at near specular angles, whereas the opposite is true at far specular angles. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The curing behavior and texture development of automotive clearcoats was studied by noncontacting profilometry and dynamic viscosity measurements during solvent evaporation and thermal curing. The changing surface texture was shown to be a strong function of temperature and solvent content. Leveling occurred during the initial heating of the clearcoats, while smaller wavelength roughness was observed to appear during cooling after curing. The dynamic viscosity was shown to be a strong function of catalyst loading. Numerical simulations were conducted to calculate the apparent viscosity during the leveling process. Calculated viscosity profiles matched theoretical predictions for the behavior of these clearcoats.
