Rubans adhésifsIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Like a teenager entering adolescence, packaging is a maturing, yet fast-changing segment of the adhesives and sealants industry. Consumer trends, environmental concerns and new technologies are all affecting packaging materials development as well as the glues used to close or label them.
Packaging is considered the largest U.S. industry segment, consuming 5.3 billion pounds of adhesives in 1997, according to "Adhesives", a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industrial market research firm.
Demand is forecast to increase 2.8 percent per year to 6 billion pounds in 2003, slightly outpacing real (inflation-adjusted) gains in packaging shipments. The U.S. packaging industry generally tracks the overall U.S. economy, albeit with a greater degree of year-to-year stability and less inherent cyclicality.
The leading application for adhesives in the packaging sector is paperboard, namely corrugated paperboard boxes. The Freedonia Group study projects steady growth in this bedrock market as the primary factor behind sector-wide gains.
In addition to paperboard packaging, the other leading end uses for packaging glues are pressure sensitive tapes and labels, bags and sacks, envelopes, film and foil packaging. Among these, tapes and labels offer the best opportunities while adhesives used in the production of paper bags and sacks are projected to decline due to continues displacement of paper bags with plastic, the Freedonia Group report stated.Note de contenu : - Multiple applications

Ressources renouvelablesIndex. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : The attributes required to make an adhesive "environmentally friendly" depend upon the application. Most of these attributes involve some kind of response to the presence of water, such as dispersing, releasing, or biodegrading.
Water dispersibility, for easy repulping, has been attained through the use of new base polymers containing hydrophilic groups. Water releasability, for easy separation of labels from bottles, has been accomplished by substituting suitable surfactants for conventional plasticizing oils in pressure sensitive formulas. Biodegradability has been enhanced via a number of routes, most of which involve the use of ester-containing ingredients.
High levels of renewability have been achievable for some time through the use of plant-derived raw materials. These various approaches, for creating "environmentally friendly" adhesives, and their benefits, drawbacks and state of development, will be discussed in this research paper.Note de contenu : - Renewable adhesives
