The development of syntans dates back to 1805 and the first commercial product appeared on the market in 1912. However, the amount of literature published or available on the chemistry of syntans is very limited. Generally, commercial products are first developed and marketed without publishing the details concerning their chemistry. As these products are tailor-made and meant for specific end-use, studies on their chemistry are very essential so that improvements in their properties can be made. It is with the object of understanding the chemical nature of syntans that studies have been carried out on the cehmistry of those base on the mixed condensation of sulphonated and unsolphonated novolacs. The results are reported in the present communication. The preparation, properties and utilisation of the syntan have been given in our previous communications. |
