A new type of styrened alkyds have been synthetised using substantial proportion of styrene (30 to 50%), a lower percentage of polyols and anhydrides and moderate proportion of oil and rosin. A new catalyst, styrocatalyst has been developed in our laboratory dor this synthesis. Various paint compositions like enamel, metal primer, wood primer and cement primer have been described in a two pack system. These compositions have excellent drying, hardness, durability and gloss characteristics. The resistance of films of these primers and enamels to water, alkali detergent and hydro chloric acid solutions is good to excellent. The resistane to sulphuric acid and nitric acid needs improvement. There is a net saving of 15 to 20 % in raw material cost of these paints. |
