The ever-increasing cost of European domestic material, coupled with effluent and environmental problems in processing from the raw, has lead to an increasing tendency to process from wet blue or pickled imported stock of a generally recognised lower quality. At the same time, tanners from areas of the world associated with indigenous, low quality raw material are exporting their leather into the very lucrative and competitive European and North American markets. Both trends have led to an increase in technical considerations of process selection for the improvement of low quality stock. The origin of this stock literally circumvents the globe from South America through Africa to India and the Far East.
It is the purpose of this paper to suggest purely practical considerations, in leather production, of process control of lower quality to upbrade this material artificially. |
