Irradiation doses were increased from 2.5 up to 20 Mrad. In a second series, the split were tanned with glutaraldehyde (Ts 68.2+-0.7°C) prior to irradiation. The effects of irradiation on the Ts and on the mechanical properties (thickness, tensile strength and elongation at break) of the splits were assessed. Irradiation caused the untanned specimens to shrink considerably. The Mrad-irradiated specimen had contracted to 8 % of its original surface area and had become extremely brittle. The Ts of the untanned specimens was, however, not influencede by the irradiation. The 2.5 Mrad dry irradiation decreased the tensil strength of an untanned specimen to 23 % of its original value, whereas wet irradiation resulted in a decrease of 50 %. With the irradiated, glutaraldehyde tanned specimens, a dose-related, exponential decrease in both Ts (r=-0.97) and tensile strength (r=-0.88) was substantiated. With 2.5 Mrad irradiation, similarly in the dry and wet states, the tensile strength was reduced to 66 % of its original value before irradiation. The applied glutaraldehyde tannage offered a relative protection against the destructive effects of irradiation. Klopper, Auteur Année de publication : 1987 Article en page(s) : p. 38-42 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Sheepskin flesh splits which had undergone all beamhouse processes were tanned with glutaraldehyde, producing three increasing degrees of tannage according to the resultant elevation of the shrinkage temperature (Ts). The respective specimens were referred to as GA low-grade (Ts60.3+-0.7°C, n=10), GA medium-grade (TS 67.7+-1.2°C, n=15) and GA high-grade (TS 74.8+-0.8°C, n=36).
The thickness, tensile strength and elongation at break of untanned of the specimens were assessed, applying an experimental testing procedure. The thickness of the specimens correlated negatively with the degree of tannage (r=0.78). The tensile strength of the GA high-grade tanned specimens equalled 30.8+-3.6 N/mm2 (n30), corresponding with an increase in tensile strength of approximately 20 %, as compared with the untanned specimens. The tensile strength values of GA low, medium and high grade tanned specimens, did not differ significantly. The elongation at break of the tanned specimens correlated negatively with the degree of tannage (r=-0.68). The stress/strain curves recorded exhibited a sigmoid shape.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1ywSwzNYrUv0Di6QuIDswW-cMVFVI7sYP/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9147

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The morphology of sheepskin splits was studied at the completion of the beamhouse processes and after a tanning procedure with glutaraldehyde had been effected. A selection of histological and microscopical methods was applied. The combination of Masson's trichrome stain and differential-interference contrast microscopy resulted in an optical relief effect on the dermal fibre system.
Using reflected light microscopy, the fibrous structure of the tanned splits could be examined directly, without requiring any form of histological processing. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated most appropriately, fibre bundle separation and splitting.
The unit-fibre was defined, measuring 5 µm and being composed of numerous collagen fibrils. After tannage, the fibre bundles appeared densely packed with markedly reduced fibre bundle splitting.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/19dkp5EkL8tu6OLPeSV9Ic-nl85Jik8kC/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9141
