The applications at this stage greatly affect the use and appeal of the final products. In this study, the effect of different coating compositions on the physico-mechanical properties of leather was investigated. For this purpose, three different types of finishing formulations including semi-aniline, lightly pigmented and opaque finishes having different covering powers rated from light to heavy, respectively, were applied to the leathers and results were compared with uncoated counterparts. The findings of the study revealed that the application of lightly pigmented finishing statistically increased the tensile strength, single and double edge tear loads, and stitch tear resistance of the leather to a large extent. Semi-aniline and opaque finishing gave lower or, in some cases, statistically insignificant increases in the physico-mechanical properties of the leathers. RhéologieIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Polymer/clay nanocomposites are a new class of reinforced polymer materials containing low quantifies of nanometric-sized clay particles which impart them better mechanical, thermal, electrical, barrier properties, chemical resistance, etc., making them valuable materials in many industrial applications such as; coatings, automotive, packaging, construction, and electronics, etc. They have great potential of increasing the fields of use which indicates them as likely to be involved in many various aspects of our lives in the near future. This book explains the preparation of polymer/clay nanocomposites via emulsion polymerization system and reveals a detailed study on the latex stability which arises as a challenge during nanocomposites latex preparations. The improvements of mechanical and thermal properties of the nanocomposite films as well as the rheological aspects of latexes which have crucial importance for coating applications are discussed. The book also includes a case application of the synthesized nanocomposite latexes as binders in leather finishing and the performance of the nanocomposite coatings is reported as well. Réaction en chaîne par polyméraseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Hides and skins are protein based materials containing high amounts of water, which makes them a nutritionally rich media ideal for bacterial growth. Being also the essential raw materials in leather manufacture, it is vital to carefully protect them against bacterial action especially in the early wet processing stages. It is well known that bacterial action can seriously damage the fiber structure of hides and skins. Hair slip, red discoloration and grain pilling are typical examples of bacterial action can lead to damage with subsequent defects on the tanned leather. The present study identifies a new defect caused by bacteria known as "biofilm" on hides and skins. For investigation of the observed defective areas, two techniques were used : Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR). The latter technique, RT-PCR, is a novel rapid method for unique detection, identification and quantification of microorganisms. The results, obtained by applying these techniques, verified the presence of "microbial biofilm" on the leather. Note de contenu : - Material
