Tannage Résumé : A set of chrome recycling trials have been carried out, to determine the extent of the influence that chrome recycling has on the colour and properties of the resultant leathers.
Initially chrome recycle liquor was obtained from a commercial tannery that had been continuously chrome recycling for a period of 18 months. A total of 8 cycles were then carried out at LIRI, using 4 sides per cycle, with the matching sides being processed by a conventional chrome tannage.
The chrome contents of the matching wet blue sides were very similar and the influence that chrome recycling had on the final leather colour, dyed medium brown, was from no difference (66 %) of sides) to slightly lighter (34 %).En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e-lRK8hp0ztgzSb4JuMkh1M3KPzFcHxH/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=8855

Tannage Résumé : A matched-side comparison has been carried out between a one-bath and a two-bath unhairing system, using 8 sides per treatment. After unhairing separately the sides were chrome tanned, retanned and fatliquored together.
Comparison of the physical properties of the crust leathers showed that the two unhairing systems gave very similar and acceptable results. However, the leathers produced from the two-bath unhairing system showed definite advantages as far as grain cleanliness, lime draw and growth marks were concerned. Slightly firmer leather was obtained from the two-bath system, with a correspondingly tighter grain break. It is felt that the softness aspect can easily be corrected by slight adjustments to the post-tanning operations.
This trial has shown that the age-old saying that "Leather is made in the beamhouse" is still valid and warrants reinvestigation by tanners who wish to improve on the grain quality of their raw material.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL : Beamhouse operations - Chrome tanning

Tannage Résumé : The patented silflo air flotation process has been operated successfully at several tanneries to purify tannery wastewater (mainl to remove suspended solids but it does not remove dissolved inorganic salts. The next obvious step was to see whether this treated wastewater could be recycled back into all or some of the tanning operations in the interests of water conservation. Trials in the LIRI experimental tannery have shown that the crust leather produced with the silflo liquor from two tanneries - where this was used in all operations from the pre-soak to retanning - was as good as the crust leather made with tap water. This will now require confirmation in large-scale tanning. Tannage Résumé : A direct liquor chrome recycling system has been successful operating at a South African wet blue tannery for approximately 4 years. For this period, excess chrome liquors (chrome wash liquors, sammying liquors and excess chrome recycle liquors) were discharged into the effluent treatment plant. This paper describes the incorporation of a plant for chrome recovery from these liquors by precipitation, settling out of the chrome sludge, and subsequent re-solubilisation of the chrome in the sludge by acidification.
The supernatant, containing very low concentrations of chrome, replaces the excess chrome liquors that were previously discharged to effluent, thereby reducing the chrome content in the effluent to an absolute minimum. (The supernatant entering the effluent contains <100mg/l Cr2O3). The chromium in the mixed effluent was reduced from 508 mg/l to 54mg/l Cr2O3 on average, after installation of the recovery plant.
The large scale implementation of this system is described, together with the economic and ecological advantages. Approximate net savings, excluding labor and electrical costs, amounted to R206 per day or batch of 1000 hides processed to the wet-blue. This amounts to an annual saving of R51700. At 251working days per annum. Tannage Résumé : The accumulated experience from world-wide large scale usage of the LIRITAN process for sole leather, and other types of vegetable leather, is reviewed. Improvements have resulted from LIRI pilot plant investigations and this world-wide large scale usage. These are discussed in the sequence of unhairing, depickling, type of polyphosphate (calgon, etc. ) and method of pretanning, the “flip-flop” system for maximum tan utilization, methods for sole, harness and belting leathers, extract dissolving, tan fixation and process control.
