Tannage Résumé : Extensive studies have been carried out on combination tannages involving basic aluminium sulphate (aluminium sulphate, masked with citrate anion) and bagaruwa (acacia nilotica var. adansonii). The use of aluminium as one of the tanning agents was found to impart improved physical properties. Amongst the combination systems evaluated, a bagaruwa pretannage followed by retannage with basic aluminium sulphate was found to produce stronger leathers.
Nigerian tanneries can largely substitute chrome with the indigenously available aluminium tanning agent, the benefits being to reduce the import of chrome and to reduce the pollution due to chrome.
Adoption of bagaruwa-aluminium combination tannages in other tanneries in the sub-region where only bagaruwa is available locally, will help to limit chrome pollution and may prove beneficial costwise. In addition to the above benefits achievable by mechanised tanneries, this technique will pave the way to upgrading the crust leathers produced by traditional tanners using only bagaruwa tannins.

In the leather industry, the dioxide of titanium finds extensive use as a whitening agent either alone or in the form of composites with barium sulphate and calcium sulphate. The thin film does not obscure or harshen the leather grain. Titanium dioxide is also used in combination with other materials for tinting leathers. As regards its inertness towards tanning materials in leathers, it does not suffer from darkening by ageing. Titanium has the best corrosion resistance as a result of its passivation (less than 0.007 mm/year) and hence it imparts better corrosion resistance than any other material usually employed in tanning systems. The white leather with anticorrosive properties produced by titanium tannage finds extensive utilisation in the production of protective gloves, clothing leathers and other outfits required to be used in corrosive atmospheres.
With regard to its function as a tannage agent, the studies carried out so far have been based on predominantly anionic titanium and the leathers obtained possessed lower hydrothermal stability, abrasive resistance and strength. In these studies, titanium exists as a double salt, viz. {(NH4)2SO4TiO(SO4)2x H201 and is in the anionic form.
This double salt, when used alone as well as in combination with certain organic and inorganic salts, is found to have filling and tanning effects in the production of leathers. A literature survey indicates that titanium forms very stable complexes in its quadrivalent state, the metal itself remaining cationic. Thus, it seems interesting to study the complexes of Ti(IV) with reference to pre-tanning, retanning and simultaneous tanning systems involving titanium, leading to fixation/ stripping of the components of the systems taken up for such tannages.Note de contenu : - Application of titanium in general

Substance dermique (cuir) -- AnalyseIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : The acid-digest of a leather sample is reacted with alkaline hypobromite and the liberated nitrogen is taken as the index for the calculation of hide substance. This gasometric method is found to produce values that compare favorably with those of the official Kjeldahl method. The proposed method completely dispenses with the sensitive distillation part of the Kjeldahl method and avoids the subsequent titration. In view of its simplicity and rapidity, the gasometric method is recommended for adoption in leather chemical analyses. Note de contenu : - Principle

Travail de rivière (cuir)Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : One of the major areas of Leather research is the development of tanning processes using less or no chrome which is a problem ingredient in tannery effluents. Full chrome suede garment leathers are pro-duced by making use of chrome tanning agent for pretanning followed by vegetable tannin extracts and/or syntans as retanning agents. A process is developed using basic titanium sulphate* in the place of chrome along with syntans and/or vegetable tannins for retan¬ning, for the manufacture of goat suedes. The resultant leathers are found to possess sufficient nap and fullness. An added advantage with these titanium-tanned leathers is that pastel shades can be obtained. The basic titanium sulphate is employed as a pickling-cum-tanning agent making use of its inherent acidity. Note de contenu : - Raw material
