Résumé : |
The effects of modification with cardanol-formaldehyde (CF) resin on the dyeing schedule and chemical resistance of rubber seed oil (RSO) and its alkyds were investigated. Cardanol was obtained by vacuum distillation of commercial grade cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) conforming to India Standard IS 841-1964. Raw RSO and its alkyds of different oil lengths were blended with CF resin in a ratio of 9:1 by heating at 200°C for 1h and the products obtained therefrom were tested for drying time and chemical resistance. Rubber seed oil is naturally semi-drying and modification with CF resins improves its drying ability, as it was able to air-dry to a hard film upon modification. Similarly, modification with CF resin greatly enhanced the drying rate and chemical resistance of RSO alkyds. The potentials of both RSO and CNSL as renewable resources could be exploited as raw materials for the Nigeria surface coatings industry. |
