SurfactantsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Water-based coating formulations contain many components, such as latex binder, pigment, dispersant, thickener, and surfactant. Complex interactions between these components affect properties of the coating in both the wet and dried states. For example, rheology of the paint is dependent on the interactions of components in the formulation. Pigment interaction can affect the degree of dispersion and, therefore, have ramifications on end use properties such as hiding and tint strength of the paint film. Isothermal titration calorimetry has been used to determine the enthalpy of interaction of the coating components. Representative examples will be given to demonstrate structure–property relationships that correlate the interactions of latex, pigment, surfactant, dispersant, and thickener with paint viscosity as well as end use performance parameters such as adhesion and tint strength. The dispersion containing DEA to maleic anhydride at molar ratio of 2:1 exhibited much smaller particle size and narrower size distribution than that containing DEA to maleic anhydride at molar ratio of 1:1, as measured by a laser diffraction particle size analyzer. A more compact organic layer was supposed to be formed by the dispersion composed of smaller size and narrower size distribution particles on the galvanized sheet, which exhibited better anticorrosive properties. This compact layer slowed down the electrolyte penetration onto the metal surface such that the life span of the metal could be prolonged, which was reflected in the increase in corrosion potential as measured by DC polarization, higher impedance during immersion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution as measured by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and improved durability in harsh environment as observed by images after salt spray tests. Two polymer matrices, an amine-cured epoxy (EP) and an acrylic urethane (AU), containing three types of TiO2 pigments, classified by different levels of photoreactivity, were studied. Specimens were exposed on an ultraviolet (UV) weathering chamber, the Simulated Photodegradation by High Energy Radiant Exposure device at the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Two exposure conditions were used: ambient, dry condition [25°C and 0% relative humidity (RH)] and high temperature, wet condition (55°C and 75% RH), which is similar to more severe outdoor exposures. The physical and chemical degradations of the filled coatings were monitored at periodic intervals using a combination of laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) and attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR). Progression of degradation on the coating surfaces was characterized by LSCM in terms of changes in surface roughness and morphology, pigment agglomerate size, and the occurrence of pits or holes in the coatings. The observed physical changes were correlated to the chemical changes measured by ATR-FTIR as a function of UV exposure time. Both EP and AU systems showed less degradation in terms of surface roughness and morphological changes under the dry conditions compared to the wet exposure conditions. It was observed that both the pigment type (and hence photoreactivity) and particle dispersion strongly affected the degradation of both EP and AU systems. Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A theoretical investigation is conducted on the wet-on-wet (WOW) process for double-layer resin coating of optical glass fiber. The coating process in the secondary coating die is modeled as a simple two-layer Couette flow of two immiscible fluids in an annulus with an assigned pressure gradient. The assumption of fully developed flow permits an exact solution to the Navier–Stokes equations. The solution discloses the relevant parameters in design and operation of a WOW coating applicator of optical fiber. For a given diameter of glass fiber and primary coating thickness, the secondary coating thickness is a function of the applied pressure gradient, the diameter of coating die, the viscosity ratio, and the fiber drawing speed. The influences of each of these control parameters on double-layer coating are scrutinized. A practical concept of thermal control of the coating process utilizing temperature-dependent viscosity of coating resins is explored. In particular, air-drying solventborne alkyd paints need to meet increasingly stringent emission limits and often must be reformulated with suitable exempt solvents or reactive diluents to achieve volatile organic compound (VOC) reduction. In the research summarized in this article, a new reactive diluent, tetra(2,7-octadienyl) titanate, was synthesized and evaluated in alkyd formulations for VOC reduction and property enhancement. A soy-based long-oil alkyd resin; a soy-based high-solids, long-oil alkyd resin; and a linseed-based, high-solids long-oil alkyd resin were evaluated in combination with the new reactive diluent at weight percentages ranging from 10% to 50%. Characterization included measuring viscosity, film dry times, and film performance of the reactive diluent formulations in comparison to neat alkyd resins used as control. The tetra(2,7-octadienyl) titanate formulations consistently exhibited reduced viscosities and dry times as a function of concentration. The resulting films were harder and more thoroughly cured than the control systems. Transparence (optique)Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Transparent ultrahydrophobic films were synthesized by sol–gel process with organic silicones modified into silica sol and cured under UV irradiation. The effects of hydrolysis temperature, hydrolysis time, molar ratio of organic silicone to silica sol, and surface morphology on the hydrophobicity of the films were discussed in detail using FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), AFM, optical transmission, and contact angle measurement, respectively. The AFM and SEM images indicated that the surface roughness enhanced the hydrophobicity of the films. The results revealed that methyl-trimethoxysilane (MTMS)-modified silica film prepared at 50°C for 2 h with an MTMS/silica sol molar ratio of 1:10 had a very high contact angle (130°). However, the higher hydrolysis temperature and longer reaction time might have accelerated the self-condensation of silanol and decreased the contact angle of the films. The structure of HBPUA oligomers was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H-NMR) spectroscopy, and gel permeation chromatography (GPC). The UV-curing kinetics of HBPUA films with Darocur 1173 were investigated, and their heat resistance and mechanical properties (including hardness, adhesion force, flexibility, and impact strength) were measured. The results show that the HBPUA oligomers have superior photosensitivity and the percent conversion of C=C reaches 81% when radiation time is 43 s. The heat resistance of the cured films decreased slightly with the increase in the content of the urethane-acrylate terminal group. Moreover, the mechanical properties of the cured films were influenced by the content of the OH group in HBP that reacted with the first NCO group of IPDI. When the content was 60%, the cured film had excellent overall properties. The hardness, flexibility, adhesion force, and impact strength were 4 H, 2 mm, 0 grade, and 47 kg cm, respectively. Matières plastiques -- Thermoformage
Résistance aux tachesIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : After thermoforming, plastic parts are stacked for shipping, and these parts tend to stick together. Called nesting, sheet stock is often first coated with a silicone compound before thermoforming to prevent this. The coating usually consists of a small amount of lubricant dispersed in a majority of carrier fluid, and this fluid must then dry before reaching the sheet winder or else the coating blotches. This coupling of coating and drying to determine when to expect blotching is examined. Roll coating involves a dimensionless group called the elasticity number that governs the thickness of the coating to be dried. The drying section involves the evaporation of the coating carrier fluid, and then diffusion into the dry surrounding atmosphere. When analyzing the drying, a new dimensionless group that governs blotching is discovered, called blotchability. The result of this analysis allows practitioners to determine which operating conditions cause blotching, and how to eliminate it. Roll coating uses a deflecting rubber roll to apply vanishingly thin coatings (≤1 μm), an interesting elastohydrodynamic problem. Note de contenu : - Avoiding applicator flooding

X-ray diffraction (XRD) data showed that the presence of Pd in TiO2 catalyst decreases the crystalline size of TiO2 and stabilizes anatase phase. The study of the photocatalytic activity of the films via Linear Sweep Voltametry (LSV) plots and antibacterial test against Escherichia coli ATCC 25922—a gram negative bacterium—showed that Pd increases the photocatalytic activity of the coatings. Besides, the sequence of layer deposition (TiO2 and Pd-modified TiO2) influences the photocatalytic properties. In other words, more photocatalytic activity is obtained when Pd-modified layer is deposited first. Natural bird droppings and their synthetic equivalent (pancreatin) were utilized for this purpose. The presence of highly-etched areas on the surface of coatings and structural variations of clearcoat after being attacked by these materials corresponded to a catalyzed hydrolytic degradation. This finding was obtained using different analytical techniques. Based on these studies, three possible hypotheses were presented, including acid catalysis, metal ion catalysis, and enzymatic catalysis. The conditions required for the occurrence of each hypothesis were discussed. It was found that acid and metal ions have a weak contribution to catalyze the hydrolysis reaction of clearcoat, whereas enzymes existing in bird droppings were mainly responsible for this hydrolytic degradation. Soudage par gaz inerte de tungstèneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : In this study, SAE 1020 steel surfaces were separately alloyed with preplaced high-carbon ferro-chromium (FeCr), ferro-molybdenum (FeMo), and ferro-titanium (FeTi) powders by using a tungsten inert gas (TIG) heat source. By using two different types of shielding gas compositions during the alloying process, the study investigated the effects of modified shielding gas composition on the microstructure, hardness, and abrasive wear resistance of specimens. It was observed that with modifications in shielding gas composition, the microstructure and volume hardness of the specimens changed and no cracks and voids were formed in the interface area. The X-ray examinations of the specimens identified Fe, FeTi, and FeMo phases in their microstructure as the first phase, and Cr7C3, Fe3C, Fe7C3, and TiC phases as the second phase. As a result, it was concluded that changes in shielding gas composition in surface alloying process significantly affect specimens’ microstructure and mechanical properties. Lower temperature aluminizing treatments of the SMAT samples were investigated by scanning electron microscope and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscope. The electrochemical corrosion behavior of the aluminized SMAT sample was studied in 0.05 mol/L Na2SO4 + 0.05 mol/L H2SO4 solution, in comparison with the original SMAT and the coarse-grained sample. The results showed that SMAT had a negative effect on the corrosion resistance of Fe. An aluminized surface layer was formed on SMAT sample by aluminizing treatment at 400°C, which was much lower than that of the conventional aluminizing treatment. A successive lower temperature aluminizing process made the aluminized layer thicker and continuous. The SMAT sample treated by a successive lower temperature aluminizing had much higher corrosion resistance and exhibited passive behavior, which was due to the formation of a protective passive film. The influence of the RHA on different mechanical properties of the cured coatings (wear, hardness, and elongation) was investigated. Wear tests in pin-on-disc mode were carried out and followed by scanning electron microscopic observations to determine the wear mechanism for specimens with different values of carbon and silica according to their different colors as fillers for epoxy paint. Pencil hardness tests and bending tests were performed according to ASTM D3363 and ASTM D522 standards, respectively. Adding RHA (heat treated at 700°C) at two levels—10 and 20% weight fraction—to the unfilled epoxy paint increased the wear resistance, scratch resistance, and elongation of the filled coating compared to the unfilled epoxy coating.

The adhesion between these multilayered coating and the mild steel substrate was studied with the aid of a scratch testing technique. Observation of the worn surface of different multilayered coatings was performed with the aid of metallurgical microscopy. The same multilayered coatings were examined with FTIR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. Finally, the corrosion behavior of bare and multilayered coated mild steel in 0.1 M NaCl solution (pH = 5.5, T = 25°C) was studied. NickelageIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The microstructure and corrosion behavior of electroless Ni–P alloy plating on 6061 aluminum alloys substrate in an alkaline plating bath with sodium hypophosphite as reducing agent were investigated. The effects of bath temperature on the plating rate, compositions, and microstructure of the electroless Ni–P deposits were studied. The results showed that the deposition rate and the P content of the electroless Ni–P deposits increased with the rise of the bath temperature. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the deposits showed nodular structure for binary deposits. X-ray diffraction patterns of all the deposits revealed a single and broad peak which indicated the amorphous structure of the deposits. Corrosion resistance of the Ni–P coatings was evaluated by potentiodynamic polarization. The results indicated that electroless Ni–P plating could obviously improve the corrosion resistance of 6061 aluminum alloy.
Oxydation -- StabilitéIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Biodiesel commonly experiences oxidative and hydrolytic degradations, leading to problems of low storage stability and corrosion of fuel containers. The present study investigates the fabrication and use of electroless-deposited nickel alloys, containing phosphorus and tungsten, as potential coating materials that effectively protect steel-based biodiesel containers from corrosion. Through long-term static immersion and high-temperature oxidation tests, coupled with surface analyses of the coatings and assessments of the biodiesel’s acidity and storage stability, it is determined that a nickel coating with 15 wt% of phosphorus is favorably compatible with biodiesel, both in terms of corrosion protection and fuel stability. VerreIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : A protective SiO2–Al2O3–Na2O glass-based coating for slab reheating application was deposited on AISI 304 stainless steel by air spraying, and its effect on high-temperature oxidation behavior of AISI 304 was investigated. Isothermal oxidation of bare and coated specimens was carried out at 1250°C in air. The results showed that the glass coating could markedly decrease weight gain of AISI 304 by 91.7% after exposure of 9 h, minimize high-temperature scaling, and enhance steel surface quality. The protective effect is attributed to the formation of molten glass layer on steel surface at high temperature, which acts as an effective oxygen diffusion barrier. This glass-based protective coating by low-cost and easily handling method is potentially applicable in a slab reheating process.
