Tannage Résumé : The agricultural use of effluent sludges is a natural means of nutrient and trace elements recovery with the aim of improving soil fertility and improvement of crops on different soils. The utilisation of tannery sludges for agricultural purpose has not found wide acceptance. The lack of interest should be attributed to the potential hazards associated with the presence of chromium in that type of sludge. Tannery sludges were thought to be applicable not only to agricultural land, but also to very poor soils for recultivation, for enrichment with organic nutrient materials, while bearing in mind that the levels of trace elements admissible for agricultural land should not be exceeded. In the region of Benghazi, for example, tannery sludges may be beneficial in afforestation programmes as well as in the stabilisation of sands by encouraging the establishment of grasses.
Another method of sludge utilisation is to compost it with refuse in municipal composting plants. The compost produced by this method may be used for all types of soil.
Combustion provides yet another method of utilisation or disposal. The relatively high calorific values of tannery sludges make them suitable for heat recovery by incineration. However, this process should be preceded by sludge make them dewatering and drying.
Prior to agricultural use, industrial sludges should be subjected to a detailed evaluation of their properties. Three major criteria are available to decide whether or not a given sludge is acceptable for agricultural needs, viz, trace elements, nutrients and hygiene. The first step of the evaluation procedure involves chemical analyses to determine the concentration of heavy metals, nutrients and macroelements. By this step, it is possible to arrive at a rough estimate of agricultural utilisation, as well as of the approximate sludge doses that may be applied to a given type of soil. Concurrent vegetation tests-ranging from the small experimental scale to the actual field scale should be carried out for arbitrarily selected species of plants.
A critical interpretation of the test results is required so aas to control the potential health hazards to man and other animals. This is a prerequisite to planning an optimum agricultural utilisation of industrial sludges, thus contributing to a successful management of the waste materials produced.En ligne : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1MYg485yXWQqLA6Hg96WoQOVFxHK1OcIC/view?usp=drive [...] Format de la ressource électronique : Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=9098

Tannage Résumé : The water reclamation plant (operated by a modern tannery in North Africa) received tanning effluent which had already been treated biologically. The technological system included chlorination, sand filtration, two-stage adsorption on ctivated carbon and reverse osmosis. The results of full scale technological investigations re presented in this paper. The system investigated yielded an influent suitable for reuse in the beamhouse.
