Entreposage frigorifiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Salt Curing is a method that is widely used for the preservation of raw hides and skins worldwide and this leads to high salinity in tannery effluents. The treatment of such highly saline stream poses serious challenges, as pollution control norms for salinity are quite stringent in many countries including India. Chilling has been proven a most efficient method both in terms of cost and preservation efficacy for short-term storage but adoption in decentralized raw material collection systems prevailing in many developing and underdeveloped countries is a major challenge. In the present techno-management study, an attempt has been made to model a strategic supply chain network for collection and chilling of raw hides and skins suitable for such decentralized situations. Tamil Nadu state in India has been chosen for the pilot project as it contributes close to 50% of the tanning activity in India. Eight clusters have been formed by grouping the districts of Tamil Nadu based on the geographical location. The optimized location for the chiller in each cluster was found using gravity location model and the feasibility of transporting the raw hides and skins from slaughterhouse to chiller has been studied. Entreposage frigorifiqueIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Chilling is considered an alternative curing method for salt-free short-term preservation of hides and skins, but no systematic studies has been carried out with this method. In the present study, an attempt was made to investigate the role of chilling temperatures on the preservation efficacy. The experiments were done in a cold temperature cabinet using goat skins and cow hides. The samples of the hides and skins, chilled to different temperatures, were analyzed for the bacterial count, soluble nitrogen and hydroxyproline. The data suggested that 4oC is the optimum temperature for 7 days storage. The results of the chilling profile study indicate the need for a blast chiller to chill down to the target temperature in less than 2 hours in order to minimize the chance for bacterial damage. The optical microscopic studies of the chilled hides and skins at different temperatures show that the fiber compaction increases with the decrease in temperature compared to the skins preserved with common salt. The leathers produced had also the required qualities and strength properties to fulfill the trade requirements as evidenced from the organoleptic assessment, physical testing and scanning electron microscopic studies. Réfrigération et appareils frigorifiquesIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : A mobile chiller suitable for salt-free preservation and storage of 2 tons of raw hides and skins has been designed and fabricated. Experiments conducted with the mobilechiller to preserve hides indicates that it is possible to chill the hides to 4°C in less than 1 hour. Studies on degradation of hides during thawing show that the safe duration of transportation of thilled hides in insulated containers might be about 15 hours. The results also confirm that a considerable reduction in TDS (total dissolved solids) and chloride pollution loads can be achieved, without any adverse effect on the final quality of the leathers, by the adoption of the chilling method in place of conventional salt curing.
