Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : With the growing demand for high-quality full-grain leathers and the necessity to minimise costs of re-working, the need for accurate and reliable sorting of semi-processed stock is becoming increasingly important. During recent studies at the British Leather Confederation,a wide range of high- and low-technology approaches has been investigated to determine whether they have any potential to detect grain damage. This has led to the development of the 'Sortassist' process based on a decolorisable pigment that effectively highlights grain faults on wet blue(75 to 85 percent detection rate) or pickled stock(over 95 percent detection rate). The pigment formulation can be applied either manually or by drum at pH>4. After grain sorting, the pigment is decolorised and chemically destroyed by a short acid-treatment step at pH<3, prior to further processing of the stock. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Increased understanding of the role played by proteoglycans in determining opening-up, which in many bovine leather processes occurs concurrently with depilation, has enabled us to advance the whole concept of beamhouse work. By combining selected proteolytic enzymes with conventional unhairing chemicals the tanner is provided with a range of options which include : 1. Accelerated processing 2. Increased opening-up of the fibre structure 3. Improved pulping and/or reduction of the requirement for sulphide 4. Replacement of the traditional bating step 5. Reduction of growth and mottle 6. Increased strength of grain leather 7. Increased area yield Initial studies with bovine hide showed that the proteolytic action during liming speeded up removal of dermatan sulphate proteoglycan and accelerated the opening-up of the collagen fibre structure, allowing a reduction in sulphide unhairing/liming time from 18 hours to six hours. The effect was most marked in the comparatively difficult to open-up neck region and grain layer. In practical terms this greatly facilitates production of well opened-up wet blue under the constraints of a 24 hour raw to wet blue process.
