Résumé : |
Epoxy resins are the class of polymers which find application in composites, primers, coatings and paints. However, epoxy-polyamide paints show low impact resistance, high degree of brittleness, low fracture toughness and fail to give a satisfactory performance under severe chemical/corrosive environment. With a view to improve these properties of epoxy paints, the DGEBA epoxy resin was modified with epoxidised oil. The different blend ratios of DGEBA-LOE-PA were evaluated for flexibility, scratch hardness, drying time and resistance to humid environment by standard methods. The optimized resin system was used to formulate a paint, and its performance was compared with the conventional epoxy polyamide paints. Epoxidised oil modified DGEBA paints system as developed was found to show far improved physico-mechanical and anticorrosive properties than the conventional DGEBA-PA paints. Its resistance to chemical was also found to be better than its conventional counterpart. This paint system replaces part of DGEBA, a petroleum based product, by a vegetable oil based epoxy, which not only makes it cost effective, but enhances the utility of this system, as a product from a renewable resource is being used in it. |
