As regulations become more restrictive, the efforts have been shifted towards the increase of application solids of HSCs or solventless coatings. The increase of application solids can be effected either by reducing the molecular weight of the oligomers or by reduction in viscosity of the oligomer. Hydroxylated Polyesters (HPs) is one of the important oligomeric precursors for the development of two pack polyurethane HSCs and the wide array of monomers available for its synthesis give enough scope for researchers to design oligomers of their choice. In this paper, two approaches have been adopted for the reduction of viscosity or to increase the application solids. The first is to replace main diol moiety NPG in a most widely used HP formulation based on adipic acid, isopthalic acid, trimethylol propane and neopentyl glycol (NPG) with 1,4 cyclohexane dimethanol and 1,3 propane diol, while the second is to introduce β-ketoester moiety in different percentages to the resultant three HPs backbone. The oligomers were characterised by gel permeation chromatography and differential scanning calorimetry. The influence of diol structures, percent β-ketoester incorporation and temperature of HPs has been studied. The results indicate that the replacements of diels and B.ketoester incorporation helps in significant reduction of viscosity of HPs. The potentialities of these HPs in coating formulation have been studied by developing two pack clear coats with diphenylmethane diisocyanate. The performance of these coatings were evaluated by determining their tensile properties, dynamic mechanical properties, corrosion resistance properties, adhesion and other coating properties such as flexibility, impact, abrasion, etc. The crosslink density (XLD) was calculated by using dynamic mechanical thermal analyser (DMTA) data. An attempt has been made to correlate both the quantitative and qualitative results so that it can give some insight into the intelligent design of coating systems for long term performance. The results indicate that the β-ketoester incorporation in HPs backbone not only helps in achieving higher application solids but also improved coating properties, depending upon the extent of incorporation. The two constituents of the blends were mixed in various blend ratios and their aforesaid coating properties were ascertained. The study revealed that 60:40 percent (w/w) ratio of the two blend components exhibited remarkable improvement in the various coating properties over that of the resins taken individually. Castor oil was allowed to react with anhydride to yield a secondary half ester, which upon further esterification with polyol and polyacids gave superior quality alkyd resins, which can find large applications in cost effective high performance industrial coatings. The molecular weights of the alkyds prepared by the acylation process, MG process and fatty acid process were recorded. Various anhydrides such as phthalic, tetrahydro phthalic and hexahydro phthalic were compared for the degree of acylation. The mechanical and chemical properties of the white enamel based on the alkyd resin prepared by the acylation technique was compared with that of alkyd resin based on the MG route and the fatty acid route having the same oil length, molecular weight and hydroxyl value. In order to achieve such special decorative effects, metal pigments are applied also in printing inks. The possibilities these decorative inks offer to the graphic art industries are of great multiplicity and still have not been exhausted.
The following is a view on production and properties of the metal effect pigments as well as the resulting problems concerning the different printing applications.
The production of metal pigments has long tradition; it has developed from the gold beaters craft which existed already in 1000 B.C. The waste resulting from the gold leaf production was pulverized in a mortar, pasted with a binder and used as paint. This process was also applied on other metal leaves.
For historical reasons, metal effect pigments are therefore called "silver" - and "gold bronze", although - from the metallurgical point of view - they have nothing to do with gold, silver or bronze. They are made of aluminium, copper and brass pigments (copper - zinc-alloy).Note de contenu : - Copper and zinc for gold bronze pigments, aluminium for silver shades
