Résumé : |
High temperature processing, higher initiator dose, use of chain transfer agent and slower monomer addition are the commonly used techniques for getting low molecular weight acrylic resin in drip-feed process. An alternate route was evaluated wherein the initiator was added in the reactor either partly or completely prior to monomer addition. Nine different resins with same monomer compositions were synthesized, one resin as a control, four resins by using each of the above four routes for getting lower molecular weight than control and four by adding part or whole of the initiator in the reactor. The viscosity, percent solids, molecular weight distribution and free monomer content of these acrylic resins and the properties of the film obtained by curing these resins with an amino resin were compared. For initiator having higher half life at the processing temperature, the new route gave resin with lowest viscosity when all the initiator was added in the reactor. The performance of this resin was found comparable to the resins of similar molecular weight obtained by using the other available routes. The study showed that in case of initiator having lower half life at the processing temperature, optimization of ratio of splitting the initiator between reactor and initiator mix is required. |
