Micronised synthetic silica gels are widely used to create matt effects in traditional surface coatings of all kinds. Their unique physical and chemical properties make them well suited to the purpose of matting, stable under a wide range of processing conditions and compatible with most coatings materials. However, commercial grades available have been developed primarily to satisfy the technical and economic demands of conventional solvent-borne systems. The challenge today is to meet the demands of the more environment friendly coatings, such as high-solids, water-borne, powder and radcure coatings, whose market share is growing rapidly. As in other forward-looking branches of the coating raw materials industry, new product development in matting agents is focused on meeting the specific requirements of these new technologies. New products have recently been commercialised and others are imminent. |
