Résumé : |
Micronised synthetic silica gels are widely used to create matt effects in surface coatings of all kinds. Their unique physical and chemical properties make them well suited to the purpose of matting, stable under a wide range of processing conditions and compatible with most coatings materials. As additives for matting, they can be incorporated directly into a paint as a post additive to adjust gloss. Alternatively, they can be formulated into matting concentrates. The various incorporation routes are described and their relative benefits compared. Guide formulations for matting agent concentrates are given. |
Note de contenu : |
- Dispersion of micronised silica gel matting agents
- Processing alternatives : concentrate or powder ? : Simplicity – Flexibility – Sensitivity to high shear equipment – Dust development – Optimum use of facilities – Optimum dispersion – Ease of handling – Ease of incorporation – Concentration limit – Formulation considerations – Compatibility – Stability on storage – Post correction of gloss is difficult
- Formulation of matting agent concentrates : 1. An alkyd diluted in mineral spirits - 2. A non-reactive resin of broad compatibility in polar solvents – 3. Water, with or without a water miscible solvent – Alkyd/mineral spirits based concentrates – Non-reactive, broad compatibility resin/polar solvent based concentrates – Water based matting concentrates |
