Résumé : |
Powder coating systems as economic and environmental friendly alternative to solvent borne counterparts are still on the race to capture a higher market share and to replace conventional systems. Due to their efficient application with nearly hundred percent utilization of the coating material and their technical performance it was possible to penetrate into several market segments including automotive, architectual, coil coatings and application on heat sensitive substrates as natural and engineered wood, MDF and plastics.
Key success factors in future will be related to further improvements in flow out/appearance of resulting films, new methods of application, a curing schedule at lower temperatures and improvements in outdoor durability.
Concerning the outdoor suitability the reader should keep in mind that the surface is exposed to a whole variety of potential aggressive media and conditions temperature change, sun light, humidity, oxygen, air polluants like nitric and sulfur oxides, ozone and others. In contact with these media the polymer matrix will undergo chemical and photochemical degradation reactions and hydrolysis. In today's discussion, degradation by fungi, mildew and bacteria is considered as well. Corresponding degradation mechanism, the test schemes for coatings in lab scale and real outdoor exposures in aggressive climates like in Florida or Arizona is reviewed in a large number of articles in literature. |
