Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Novel dihydroxy functional 3-arm star polymers were synthesized using a combination of atom transfer radical polymerization, ring opening polymerization, and click chemistry. The diols were characterized using gel permeation chromatography, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and 1H NMR spectroscopy. The diols were incorporated into polyurethane coatings, which were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, pendulum hardness, water contact angle, and methyl ethyl ketone double rubs. The coatings showed an increase in the water contact angle values as the percentage of the polystyrene-based diol was increased. Similarly, the coatings with the poly(tert-butyl acrylate)-based diols showed a decrease in the glass transition temperature values with an increase in the diol content. It is expected that the use of controlled radical polymerization would allow for the synthesis of novel tailor-made functional polymers to achieve tunable coatings properties. The rate of water transportation and the degree of saturation of polymeric coatings depends on exposure history, exposure environment, and the nature of a coating. The focus here is on the time taken for transport of water and the variation it causes in thermal and mechanical properties, which have also been shown previously to have time-dependence that leads to discrepancies between different weathering regimes. This paper studied the effect of moisture on coatings’ mechanical properties and the effect of moisture and temperature on recovery of surface indentation. The reduction of mechanical properties and the increasing rate of surface defect relaxation can be explained in terms of plasticization by water. Recovery of surface defects is related to the appearance and diffusion activity of coatings during exposure. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the content of moisture in the sample is determined by the ambient humidity, temperature, and the rate of change in these environmental parameters. Diffusion coefficients were determined from the weight change data and an activation energy was obtained via Arrhenius equation. Changes in yellowness, as an example, and signature of chemical degradation, indicated that the cycling period in accelerated weathering may affect the degradation via the amount and distribution of moisture in coatings. Diffusion of moisture is typically slow and limits the possibility of complete drying or saturation in an exposure cycle. In current market conditions, cost savings and product innovation are critical issues. In this article, an artificial neural network, of the feed forward type, was trained using as inputs key properties of titanium dioxide and two formulation parameters (pigment volume concentration and titanium dioxide content) for a water-based architectural coating. The outputs of this research were spread rate, color (L*, a*, b*) and tinting strength. Test data were used to check the accuracy of the model, demonstrating the viability of paint properties prediction related to the properties of the titanium dioxide formulation with high correlation (>95%). In this study, the effect of curing process on simulated antisoiling properties of sol–gel coating was investigated. The sol–gel coating was spray-coated on pine sapwood and cured with different temperature and time combinations. The antisoiling properties were studied by measuring the water contact angle of the coating after different curing processes. In addition, abrasion resistance and contact angle of oleic acid were measured. An optical profilometer was used to investigate surface roughness of the coating. Sufficient hydro- and oleophobicity were obtained with all of the curing parameters. The comparison between curing parameters showed that lower temperature and 1–3 h curing time leads to significant improvement in the durability of the water and oil repellent properties of the coating. Revêtements:PeintureIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Protection of oxidizable metals against corrosion has now being intensively investigated, by applying or developing different methods such as coatings and conversion films; however, all reported methods involve environmentally hazardous materials. Conducting polymers have now been used as corrosion inhibitor coatings that are either chemically or electrochemically deposited on the metal substrate. The application of nanotechnology in the corrosion protection of metals has recently gained momentum. Environmental impact can also be improved by utilizing nanostructure particulates in coatings and eliminating the requirement of toxic solvents. We report here the synthesis of nanoparticles of polyaniline (PANI) and poly-o-anisidine (POA) using emulsion polymerization method in micellar solution of SDS and their anticorrosive property has been experimentally checked. The prepared nanoparticles have been characterized by FTIR and TEM. The nanoparticles of the synthesized polymers were dispersed in alkyd paint formulation for coatings on the metal surface (mild steel). The water absorption in the prepared coatings was also studied. The corrosion rate of polymeric film was determined by weight loss measurement and the surface morphology was examined by SEM. The nano PANI/Alkyd coatings showed considerable protection against corrosion than the POA/alkyd coatings. PolydiméthylsiloxaneLe polydiméthylsiloxane —[O-Si(CH3)2]n—, ou poly(diméthylsiloxane) selon la nomenclature systématique, communément appelé PDMS ou diméthicone, est un polymère organominéral de la famille des siloxanes souvent présent dans les shampoings. On l'y ajoute pour augmenter le volume des cheveux mais il peut également aller boucher les pores du cuir chevelu et rendre les cheveux gras. C'est une des raisons pour lesquelles se laver les cheveux tous les jours est très déconseillé avec un shampooing contenant des silicones.
Il existe également de l'amodiméthicone, qui est un dérivé du diméthicone.
Le polydiméthylsiloxane est un additif alimentaire (E900), utilisé comme antimoussant dans les boissons (Coca-Cola BlāK).
La chaîne de poly(diméthylsiloxane) forme également la structure de base des huiles et des caoutchoucs silicones.

SiliconesLes silicones, ou polysiloxanes, sont des composés inorganiques formés d'une chaine silicium-oxygène (...-Si-O-Si-O-Si-O-...) sur laquelle des groupes se fixent, sur les atomes de silicium. Certains groupes organiques peuvent être utilisés pour relier entre elles plusieurs de ces chaines (...-Si-O-...). Le type le plus courant est le poly(diméthylsiloxane) linéaire ou PDMS. Le second groupe en importance de matériaux en silicone est celui des résines de silicone, formées par des oligosiloxanes ramifiés ou en forme de cage (wiki).
Silsesquioxanes oligomères polyhèdresIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : An array of quaternary ammonium functionalized-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (Q-POSS) compounds with different alkyl chain lengths and counter ions were synthesized using a two-step process. First, octasilane POSS was functionalized with dimethylamino groups by hydrosilylation with allyldimethylamine. Next, partial quaternization of the tertiaryamino-functional POSS was achieved using an alkyl halide to produce the Q-POSS. Alkyl chain length of the Q-POSS compounds varied from –C12H25 to –C18H37 and the counter ions varied between chlorine, bromine, and iodine. Moisture-cured polysiloxane coatings were prepared by dispersing Q-POSS molecules into a solution blend of silanol-terminated polydimethylsiloxane, methylacetoxysilane, and a catalyst. To evaluate the utility of the Q-POSS molecules as a broad-spectrum antimicrobial additive, the antimicrobial activity of the coatings toward the Gram-negative bacterium, Escherichia coli, the Gram-positive bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus, and the opportunistic fungal pathogen, Candida albicans, was determined using an agar plating method. The results obtained showed that both the composition of the Q-POSS and the composition of the polysiloxane matrix affected antimicrobial properties. Compositions were identified that inhibited the growth of all three microorganisms on the coating surface. Surface Raman spectroscopic analysis was performed on selected set of coatings to understand the relative concentration of Q-POSS molecules at the coating surface. Spectroscopie de photoélectronsIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : The soap-free fluorine-containing acrylate latices were prepared by the pre-emulsification and semicontinuous polymerization method, with perfluorooctylethyl methacrylate (PFEA) as fluorinated acrylate monomer and monophosphoric acid allyloxy nonylphenoxy poly(ethyleneoxy)(10) ether as reactive emulsifier. The structure and property of latex polymers were characterized by laser particle size analyzer, attenuated total reflectance spectra of infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and thermogravimetric analysis. The effects of polymerization conditions on the conversion and polymerization stability were discussed in detail and the optimal polymerization condition was obtained. XPS analysis indicates that the perfluoroalkyl groups have the tendency to enrich at the film–air interface. With the increasing of PFEA amount, the water absorption of the film decreases and the water contact angle of the film increases. At the same time, the thermal stability of the copolymer is greatly enhanced with the increasing of PFEA amount. StyrèneIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Glass–fiber-reinforced plastic (GRP) vats are used widely for the storage of foodstuffs and potable water. As the inner surfaces deteriorate during decades of use, they need to be repaired. The unsaturated polyester resins that are used for recoating are crosslinked with styrene which can cause taint and odor problems. This article describes some coating parameters that affect the content of residual styrene and its subsequent migration. The influences of cure temperature and duration, along with the effect of washing with warm detergent solution, were investigated. Cured specimens were tested for their residual styrene content and for styrene migration into the food simulants, distilled water, 3% acetic acid, and 15% ethanol. The dominant factor in reducing the amount of residual styrene is the temperature. The resin self-heats as it cures, typically up to 50°C. Thus, any further lowering of the styrene content requires a higher cure temperature than this. A 3-h cure at 80°C reduced both the residual content and the migration levels by about 100-fold. At lower cure temperatures, the heating effect of washing at 60°C is more important than the washing effect of the detergent. When less catalyst was used the residual styrene levels rose dramatically, from 70 to 360 to 1300 mg/kg for the normal dose, half and quarter the normal dose, respectively. There was a linear relationship between residual content in the GRP and the migration levels. This correlation could be used for monitoring the quality of vats repaired in situ, using styrene-based coating resins. The coating adhesion on each material substrate was investigated using a progressive load scratch tester (PLST) and a multi-pass scratch tester (MPST). Microhardness tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were also used to examine the hardness and microstructure of the NbN coatings. These results have indicated that the structural, mechanical, and adhesion properties of the NbN coatings improve with increasing target currents. While performing PLST and MPST tests, the highest adhesion and lowest friction force were obtained for the coatings deposited at a target current of 3.5 A. In addition, the triboscobic behaviors that were observed from the MPST of the coatings indicated that the target currents affect the friction behavior of the coatings. Because these compounds are carcinogenic and toxic, eco-friendly systems capable of replacing them are being evaluated. In this work, the corrosion behavior in 0.5 M NaCl solution of zinc coatings deposited from a free-cyanide alkaline bath and treated with Cr3+ based passivation coatings were characterized through DC and EIS techniques. The salt spray test as well as studies of the surface structure and chemical composition were also performed. From these analyses it was inferred that (1) the green-colored Cr3+ passivated coatings provide better corrosion resistance than the yellow- and blue-colored coatings, and (2) together with an adequate painting system, they could be a less polluting and less toxic alternative to traditional chromate coatings. A homemade horizontal reactor was used for deposition from SnCl2 + 2H2O precursors with pure oxygen flowing at a rate of 5 ccpm. The structure was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy techniques to reveal the deposition mechanisms and crystalline structures. XRD analysis showed that the predominant phase in all experimental conditions was SnO2. From the XRD analysis, it is understood that the preferred orientation of the SnO2 films is dependent on their thickness, which is affected by deposition time and substrate temperature. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was employed to study the morphology of the nanofibers, respectively. The AFM results indicated a significant change in the morphology of the nanofibers before and after the ITO sputter coatings. The light transmittance and surface conductivity of the ITO-deposited nanofibers were also investigated. It was found that the surface resistivity of the PA6 nanofiber with the ITO deposition had a significant drop and the ITO deposition obviously affected the light transmittance of the PA6 nanofibers. Tellurure de cadmiumIndex. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Cadmium telluride thin films were prepared on microscopic glass substrates by vacuum evaporation technique. The morphology of the thin films as a function of substrate temperature and postdeposition heat treatment was investigated by atomic force microscopy. The grain size increases with the increase of substrate temperature and postdeposition annealing. Calculated amount of copper was evaporated to deposit on the top of the already deposited CdTe thin films. The whole assembly was then annealed at 450°C for about 4–6 min. These samples were characterized structurally, optically, and electrically by using XRD, spectrophotometer, and Hall Effect measurements, respectively. Doping with Cu has significantly changed the electrical properties of the CdTe films. The measurements have shown band gap of 1.475 eV and resistivity ranging from 0.132 to 0.002 Ω cm, depending on the copper concentration. Increase in the weight percentage of copper showed decreasing trends in resistivity up to 3 wt%. Mobility showed the opposite behavior than those of the resistivity. The carrier concentration showed a systematic increase. Analysis of the acetoacetylated material via NMR and elemental analysis showed that 60–80% of the available reactive moieties of shellac had been converted to ester. Crosslinked films were produced by reacting the acetoacetylated shellac with a multifunctional amine or with a multifunctional acrylate under Michael addition conditions. The films had good properties in terms of solvent resistance, hardness, and gloss, but proved to be somewhat brittle.
