One of the more intriguing developments in protective coatings technology during the 1990s, has been the creation of a new generic class of high performance resins based on siloxane chemistry. Organic coatings degrade as a result of thermal oxidation, photo-initiated oxiation or by chemical attack. Polysiloxane network composition provides significantly enhance thermal and chemical resistance properties as well as offering extended weatherability and appearance retention. Recent advances in siloxane chemistry and formulation technology have led to the development of ambient temperature curable polyxiloxane coating systems with significant advantages compared to traditional inorganic and organic coatings.
This paper discusses the various polysiloxane topcoats as well as "hybrid systems in which properties of a traditional organic resin have been selectively and significantly upgraded. |
