PigmentsIndex. décimale : 667.6 Peintures Résumé : Distemper paints have long been associated with and play an important part of the Indian paint market. Designed as economical paints that can refreshed frequently to help keep building walls clean and bright, many different brands are available from small local producers to the largest of multinational companies. This evaluation looked at six commercially available Distemper products, five from the leading, multination brands and one from a local (Mumbai) supplier.
The chosen paints were all purchased from locations within Mumbai in September 2018. The paints were tested for their application and optical properties and the results compared to give a ranking of performance. The same paints were then evaluated, by various analytical techniques, to determine their approximate composition including titanium dioxide type and level and extender types and levels. Using the reverse-engineered formulations, the paints were then tested with various levels of FP-Pigments Opacity pigment replacing the titanium dioxide pigment.Note de contenu : - Part 1 : Comparison of the six commercial paints

Revêtements (produits chimiques):Peinture (produits chimiques)Index. décimale : 667.2 Colorants et pigments Résumé : Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) pigment has celebrated over 100 years of commercial manufacture and for most of that time it has been the primary white pigment, providing whiteness, brightness and opacity to paints, coatings, plastics, inks, paper and many other applications.
The terms hiding, hide and opacity tend to be used interchangeably in the coatings industry: hiding power and opacity are defined in the standard way as ‘the ability of a substance or coating to obscure a substrate of contrasting colour’. If a coating contains small particles, light passing through the coating can be internally reflected and diffracted at the interfaces between particles and polymer medium, preventing the light reaching the underlying substrate. This light scattering phenomenon is directly influenced by the refractive index of the different phases through which the light passes. In essence, the larger the difference between the refractive index of the pigment/extender and the continuous phase medium, the greater will be the scattering of light.
Titanium dioxide’s high refractive index, carefully controlled physical properties and relative inertness make it the first choice when light scattering is required, although many see TiO₂ as a ‘necessary evil’ and a costly formulation ingredient.
Where the highest levels of wet opacity are desired, TiO₂ outperforms all other pigments and extenders.Note de contenu : - Comparing the wet hide performance of TiO2 and extenders

Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.6 Peintures Résumé : A number of interactions can occur between titanium dioxide and mineral extenders, which can effect a range of paint properties, such as rheology, durability, opacity and scrub resistance, some of which are not fully appreciated. This paper look at one of these interactions, TiO2 spacing by extenders, and the effect it has on the optical properties and scrub resistance of emulsion paints. Evaluation of the possible TiO2 savings suggest that, while small reductions (ca. 5%) in TiO2 loadings could be made with flash calcined extenders in certain paint systems, implementing greater savings, as suggested by the manufacturers, led to detrimental effects on several other important paint properties.
