Almost everyone will have been confronted at some stage in their life with the problem of staining on walls and ceilings or, in the case of wood, discolourations due to extractives bleeding through light-coloured coats of paint. Nicotine stains in the homes of heavy smokers or in restaurants and dried water stains from burst pipes are extremely persistent and cannot be blocked simply by using conventional dispersion-type renovation paint. Woods rich in extractives, such as oak, merbau or redwood and gypsum plasterboard are just as problematical. Contact with water vapour or a water-based paint causes the extractives to dissolve and to diffuse to the surface where they form yellowish-brown spots or give the entire surface an usightly appearance. This process, which is know as 'bleeding', is difficult to deal with and will recur no matter how many coats of high-coverage dispersion paint are applied. Similar problems are experienced with soot stains after a fire, graffiti from marker pens in children's bedrooms and splashes of cooking oil, fat or other foodstuffs on kitch walls.Note de contenu : - Stain blocking paints and primers

Titre : Fighting stains with waterborne coatings : Cationic polymer dispersions as environmentally friendly solution to effectively tackle stains Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Julien Fisher, Auteur ; Wim van Drunen, Auteur Année de publication : 2007 Article en page(s) : p. 168-170 Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Anti-staining - Effective stain blocking of, e.g. nicotin stains, is difficult to achieve with waterborne architectural paints, because stains tend to recur after a while in such systems. Cationic acrylate dispersions, however, can be used for high-quality water-based blocking paints and primers. They show good adhesion on variety of substrates, are cost effective and environmentally compliant.
