We confirmed that both amine and phosphonium compounds can catalyze the reaction of epoxy groups with carboxyl and anhydride groups. There are certain deficiencies with these catalysts, such as a tendency to yellow and a reduction in stability at ambient or elevated temperatures. We also observed that many of the known amine catalysts contribute to poorer humidity resistance and exterior durability. Several metal salts were found to be effective catalysts, but they also contributed to a reduction in chemical resistance or they led to paint instability.
We have discovered a group of metal chelates that overcome these problems and provide stable formulations in a single package that do not yellow during cure and that give improved resistance properties. The new catalysts have been evaluated in high-solids epoxy/carboxyl coatings, automotive clearcoats, and powder coatings.Permalink : https://e-campus.itech.fr/pmb/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id=5670

Titre : A variable radius roll adhesion test (VaRRAT) suitable for measuring the adhesion of paint to metal Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Damien Jinks, Auteur ; Hugh Brown, Auteur ; David Buxton, Auteur Année de publication : 2002 Article en page(s) : p. 49-61 Note générale : Bibliogr. The test is designed for measuring the adhesion of paint to deformable steel sheets as used in building, automotive, and other cladding applications, and does not require detailed knowledge of the paint mechanical properties. A stiff overlay, such as an epoxy resin, is applied to the coating, and the steel substrate is peeled away using a roll of well defined radius to which the steel substrate is con strained. The propagation of a crack within the paint or at some interface in the paint/metal system depends mostly on the mechanical properties and thickness of the overlay and the radius of the constraining roll. The test is shown to discriminate better than existing practical adhesion tests between paints of expected differing adhesion/cohe sion, but also presents some inconsistencies that require further work to resolve. From EIS and corrosion potential data analysis it was found that (1) there is not a significant influence of the tannin pretreatment on the anticorrosive protection level, which depends particularly on the barrier effect afforded by the applied paint system (however, as the corrosion process starts, tannins may cause the repassivation of steel); (2) the enhancement of the protection level afforded by the tannin primer was restricted to short immersion periods and corrosive media that were not very aggressive; and (3) water uptake was not significantly affected by the presence of the tannin primer.
