Gas chromatography (GC) and thermal analysis were among the techniques used for this purpose. The changes in coalescing agent and binder content were determined by GC and thermogravimetric analysis, respectiveely, and the changes in glass transition temperature by differential scanning calorimetry. It was found that the type of porous substrate could significantly affect the paint composition (pigment volume concentration, coalescent level) during the film formation process. Three sol-gel precursors, titanium tetra-i-propoxide (TIP), titanium (di-i-propoxide) bis (acetylacetonate) (TIA), and zirconium tetra-n-propoxide (ZrP) were used in conjunction with cobalt, manganese, and zirconium driers. The goal of this study was to investigate if a synergy exists between the drier and sol-gel precursors with respect to the autooxidation process. Various coating properties such as hardness, adhesion, reverse impact resistance, and flexibility were evaluated as a function of sol-gel precursor and drier content. Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) has been used to investigate the size, shape, and correlation of the nm sized structure. USAXS, with a measurable range extending to the µm order, can be used to analyze the submicron sized structure of paints and coating films. Preliminary USAXS experiments for a magnetic paint and magnetic coating films revealed that USAXS is useful to evaluate the structure of the particles in the paint and the films. Combined with other experimental methods, USAXS will provide a new kind of information about the structural analysis. In addition, all individual raw materials utilized in preparing the paints were also tested for their VOCs. There were significant differences between claimed and measured VOCs for both raw materials and finished paints. The measurement error for VOC of finished paints was eight percent. This error increased exponentially as the VOC declined below about 250 g/L, reaching about 200% at VOCs below 50 g/L. The range of error also increased exponentially below about 250 g/L, reaching 1000% below 50 g/L. The major sources of VOC error in all cases ere in the water and nonvolatile determinations. We have all dealt with color since we were babies, but most people have little understanding of color. Many technical people think of it as an aspect of physics dealing with the distribution of visible light. While that is a factor, color is a psychophysical phenomenon. The difficulty of understanding color can be seen by considering the most rigorous definition of color that has been prepared: Color is that characteristic of light by which an observer may distinguish between two structure-free fields of view of the same size and shape. In effect, it says that color is what is left to distinguish between two objects when all the other variables are removed. Not a very satisfying definition.
Color has three components: an observer, a light source, and an object. (The single exception is when the tight source is the object being viewed.) There is no color on an uninhabited island. This is not just a semantic statement; color requires an observer. There is no color in the absence of light; in a completely darkened room there is no color, not because you cannot see it, but because it is not there. There must be an object; if you look out the window of a spaceship without looking at a planet or star, there is no color--there is an observer, there is light, but there is no object.
Another major factor affecting appearance is surface roughness. If a surface is very smooth, it has a high gloss; if it is rough on a scale below the ability of the eye to resolve the roughness, it has a low gloss. If, however, the roughness can be resolved visually, a film may exhibit brush marks, orange peel, texture, and so forth. Furthermore, there can be a combination of small scale and larger scale roughness, so films can, for example, have a low gloss and brush marks or high gloss and orange peel. The eye can resolve irregularities in surface smoothness of approximately 25 mm, depending on the distance from the object.
