Résumé : |
Photochromism is the reversible change in the absorption spectrum of a molecule on irradiation by light of certain wavelength. This phenomenon is observed in various compounds. Two types of photochromic polymer systems exist, those in which photo chrome is incorporated into a polymer binder in the form of a solid solution and the others inherently photochromic polymers. This article attempts to review the properties needed forany class of photo-chromic compounds and the mechanisms responsible for the photo chromic effect and also gives an account of the synthesis, structural and physical properties of fulgides, benzopyrans, naphthopyrans, spironaphthoxazines, spirobenzopyrans and their derivatives. The chiral photochromic Liquid Crystalline (LC) polymers are of great importance because they combine the properties of LC polymers and photochromic polymers. The article also covers the extensive applications of the photo chromic polymer systems in the field of ophthalmics, printing, textiles and in optical data storage. |
