Solvent-based polymers are homogeneous in nature, since all polymeric materials tend to be dissolved in the same solvent mixture. This is different for most waterborne polymers, which tend to be present in a compartmentalized way. Most polymeric materials are present in particles, which are separated by the continuous aqueous phase. This gives excellent opportunities to create particle morphologies that form the basis for the film morphology after drying of the coating. This article gives an overview of the various types of heterogeneity which are accessible in waterborne polymers and will show how heterogeneity in the polymer can contribute to the solution of several persistent problems of the coating industry. The appeal of this broad class of materials can be attributed to the unique combinations of properties that can be achieved by combining an inorganic phase with an organic phase. HOI materials can be divided into two basic categories: homogeneous systems derived from monomers or miscible organic and inorganic components, and heterogeneous, phase-separated systems with domains ranging from angstroms to micrometers in size. The structure of the inorganic component is dependent on the interaction of many variables such as pH, water content, overall solution concentration, solvent composition, temperature, and time. Due to the complexity of HOI materials, a combinatorial/high-throughput approach to the development of novel materials is highly desired. The authors have recently developed a combinatorial workflow for the synthesis and characterization of HOI coatings. Initial experimentation conducted with the workflow was focused on the development of primers for corrosion protection derived from a HOI binder system and magnesium particles. Both the homogeneous and heterogeneous HOI binders were investigated. With just one iteration of the combinatorial workflow, heterogeneous, moisture-curable HOI binders were identified, which enabled the formation of magnesium-rich primers that provided excellent corrosion protection to an aerospace aluminum alloy (Al 2024). The coatings’ properties depend on the composition and the structure of the conversion films as well as on the process parameters. A fractional factorial design was implemented to optimize the experimental conditions of the chromating process (bath composition, rinses composition, draining, treatment time). Surface analytical techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, glow discharge optical spectroscopy, and atomic absorption spectrometry were used to characterize the chromate conversion coatings. Langues : Américain (ame) Tags : Stripping Swelling Solvent Internal stress Flory–Huggins Griffith Adhesion Fracture strength Index. décimale : 667.9 Revêtements et enduits Résumé : Chemical paint stripping is a part of paint technology that is very necessary but for which quantitative understanding has been comparatively unexplored. Traditional paint strippers were based on very effective solvents, such as dichloromethane, that are now recognized as being dangerous for people and the environment. Optimal replacement by environmentally sound, and effective, paint strippers requires a better understanding of the action of the traditional materials. This communication links the stripping of cured paint films by aggressive solvents to the effect that swelling has on the cohesive and adhesive properties of a crosslinked polymer network. Swelling, described by the well-known Flory–Rehner equation, can be used to estimate the reduction in strength of the coating film. Thus, its resistance to fracture, described by the Griffith equation, is decreased so that the swelling stresses cause severe weakening and sometimes spontaneous removal. The equations lead to a description that fits well with common experience and so may be useful in selecting materials for future, less toxic, and more easily disposed, stripping formulations. The behavior of a methyl ethyl ketoxime (MEKO)-blocked isocyanate on heating was studied using thermal analytical techniques. Following this, the curing behavior of a PEPU-based can coating (PEPU01 that contained an aluminum flake pigment) and the MEKO-blocked isocyanate was investigated. A study of the unblocking of the MEKO-blocked isocyanate in the PEPU01 can coatings was undertaken with respect to the migration potential of any residual-free isocyanate compounds that could migrate from the cured PEPU can coatings to the surrounding medium (e.g., foodstuffs). The as-prepared HAp coatings were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrum, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses. The influence of ethanol on the phases and microstructures of HAp coatings was investigated. Results show that the coatings’ crystallization shows little change with the increase in ethanol content up to 15%, but the density, homogeneousness, and adhesion with the substrate of HAp coatings obviously improved. The deposition mechanism of the HAp coating is also discussed. Thus, it is helpful to get dense and good-adhesion HAp coatings when ethanol is added into the solution during the hydrothermal electrodeposition process. Changes in mechanically produced indentations and scratches with annealing indicate a surface transition temperature about 10 degree lower than the measured bulk glass transition temperature (T g). Polymer molecules at a free surface, even in a crosslinked coating, may have higher mobility, and thus allow different relaxation activity from the bulk material. The eventual extent of deformation is a function of the annealing temperature and time. Results showed that the deformation profile diminished, driven by viscoelastic deformation and surface energy; the effect of structural relaxation will be further studied. When the surface features were generated by photodegradation, the roughness increased initially when temperature was increased, possibly due to phase coarsening, and then the roughness diminished during extended annealing. The effect of a prepared waterborne organic corrosion inhibitor with the best formula of each binder was studied. The role of binders on the corrosion inhibition of steel in the absence and presence of the corrosion inhibitor was studied. Physical, chemical, and mechanical properties, weight loss, corrosion resistance, and water up-take tests in the absence and presence of the corrosion inhibitor revealed that the protective properties of the three binders used at their optimum PVC against corrosion could be arranged in the following order: short oil alkyd > Urabrid AC 100 > acrylic emulsion resins. The prepared corrosion inhibitor showed excellent inhibition efficiency with the three used binders. For small size and surface effect of nano materials, aggregation tendency should be resolved before practical application. Hence, different dispersing methods were designed and examined. Nano-ZnO/acrylic resin composite coatings were prepared to form nano-functional coatings. It was observed that the composite with uniform distribution of nano-ZnO in the acrylic resin had multifunctionalities. Different treatment methods for tetrapod-like nano-ZnO whiskers demonstrate an intensified affect on the final functional effects of composite coatings. The coatings can be used for plastic materials, etc. Furthermore, the mechanisms of the functions were also analyzed for the sake of understanding. The surface and interface structures of the functionalized ceramic fibers were investigated by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). The observations by AFM revealed the formation of nanoclusters on the fiber surface. The coated layer of the sputtered copper was also confirmed by the ESEM examination, equipped with an energy-dispersive X-ray analysis. It was also found that the electrical resistance of the ceramic fibers decreased with increased coating thickness. The interfacial bonding between fibrous substrate and sputter-coated copper was investigated and discussed by peel-off tests in this study. The mechanism of the interfacial adhesion between copper and fiber substrate was also discussed. The effect of chemical and thermal treatments on the crystallographic, morphological, optical, and electrical properties were studied through XRD, scanning electron microscope (SEM), spectrophotometry, and dc electrical resistivity measurements, respectively. The studies revealed that the CdTe grows in face centered cubic phase and that post-deposition treatment affects the morphology as well as the crystallographic properties. The effect on the morphology is stronger. Increase of the grain size was observed in the samples treated thermally. The electrical resistivity drops by a factor of 20 in CdCl2-immersed and heated samples. To confirm the durability and viability of this coating, long-term field tests were carried out in the Nanao harbor in Taiwan. Electrical resistivity tests showed that polyurethane resin with carbon black and graphite can demonstrate the lowest resistivity: 0.06 Ωm. This sample also generated optimal quantities of free chlorine, which performs excellent antifouling properties. The use of carbon black in conjunction with graphite did prove to yield greater benefits. A 500-day field test showed that the PU-CG conductive coatings reduced the quantity of marine biofouling attached to the cage by approximately 79%. Furthermore, the chlorine produced was within safe levels, and judged not to pollute the sea. However, this antifouling system still shows durable problems which remain to be considered. The POT-CdO nanoparticle composite coating was synthesized on mild steel from aqueous tartrate solution containing CdO-nanoparticles (size ~18 nm) by using cyclic voltammetry. These coatings were characterized by cyclic voltammetry, UV–Visible absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction measurements. The corrosion protection aspects of the resulting POT-CdO nanocomposite structure were investigated in aqueous 3% NaCl solution by potentiodynamic polarization technique and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The results of these investigations reveal that the POT-CdO nanoparticle composite acts as a protective coating on mild steel and reduces the corrosion rate of mild steel almost by factor of 70. The tribological performance of MoS2 solid lubricant coatings in the different atmospheres has been improved by the codeposition of a small amount of another metal. In this study, the tribological behavior of MoS2/Nb coatings was investigated in ambient air at temperatures up to 500°C by using high-temperature pin-on-disc tribo testers and alumina balls as counterfaces. MoS2/Nb coatings were deposited on silicon wafers and AISI 52100 steel substrate by closed-field unbalanced magnetron sputtering. The structural analyses of the coatings were performed using X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy techniques. The hardness was measured using a microhardness tester. Panels were coated with five types of gelcoats to compare the effect of antifouling agents on the forming of biofilms. Pesticide and elemental silver-based additives in two weight ratios (0.003 and 0.006) were used as the antifouling agents for the gelcoat. The temporal variation in recruitment of biofilms was examined by isolation of attached bacteria during a boat storing period in a marina located along the Izmir Bay (Turkey). It was found that the gelcoat with silver ion had slight superiority over the counterparts in this study. The first 15 days of bacteria formation was the significant period for examining the antifouling performance of a coating material.
