The polymer blend technique is a simple and useful method for improving the paint performance. The utilization of latex blends to prepare zero VOC coatings and develop high performance coating is the advance in waterborne technology that is of increasing interest to coating formulators. The polymer blend provides a number of surprises, which are important from both scientific and technological point of view. There are number of parameters that can be varied in the blend system. These parameters are blend ratio of soft phase to hard phase, molecular weights, functional groups and constituents of polymers. Blends of different polymer Tg, particle size, molecular weight, hydrosol-acrylic blend, reactive latex blend and fluoropolymer-acrylic blends have been discussed in this paper. The potential benefits of improving block resistance, print resistance, tensile strength, hardness of the film and commercial applications in VOC free latex paints, high performance exterior architectural paints, industrial coatings and thermosetting coatings have been reviewed. |
