This article will evaluate properties elastic sealants, which are likely to be used in the most demanding movement applications. Including in the evaluation is a new technology polymer - MS Polymer, which can be described as a silyl terminated polyether developed by Kaneka Corp. in Japan (1,2). MS Polymer is finding commercial use in Japan, Europe and the USA as a base polymer for adhesives and sealants. Three one-part sealant types are assessed - MS Sealant, silicone and polyurethane. Polyurethane-, silicone-, and silyl-terminated polyether (STPE)-based materials enjoy substantial market share in sealant applications due to their superb flexibility and adhesive characteristics, while epoxy products have remained a dominant force in adhesive applications due to their outstanding strength and good adhesion properties after surface treatment.
While these chemistries can meet most application requirements, performance gaps still need to be filled that require a balance of strength, flexibility, and adhesion. Examples of such opportunities include a primer that can endure structural movement and an adhesive that can withstand substrate vibrations or oscillations.
STPEs have an established history and are known to provide benefits such as being free of solvents and isocyanate while offering primerless adhesion to a wide range of materials, including metals, wood, glass, and many plastics. A more recent development by Kaneka North America LLC is to combine MS Polymerâ„¢, an STPE, with epoxy technology as a two-component (2K) system to provide a balance of high-strength performance and flexibility. The cured compound also provides bonding properties similar to traditional epoxy materials.Note de contenu : - Curing mechanism

Given these unique benefits, 2K STPE/ Epoxy systems can be used as a flexible primer in a multilayer waterproofing system to better accommodate structural movement, or as a high strength, flexible adhesive to withstand substrate movement. Moreover, the exceptional wet adhesion retention on concrete indicated that a 2K STPE/Epoxy formulation could provide improved adhesion performance to structures where frequent water exposure might be an issue. Kaneka's 2K STPE/ Epoxy technology might be the solution that could resolve a multitude of unmet needs in both the construction and the industrial markets. Note de contenu : - Impact of additives

Réticulation (polymérisation)Index. décimale : 668.3 Adhésifs et produits semblables Résumé : Sealants based on silyl-terminated polyethers (MS sealants) have become the most used type of sealant in Japan since their introduction some 20 years ago. In Europe, the interest in MS sealants dates back to the late 1980s and can be attributed in part to their environmental friendliness. The current market size for MS sealants in Europe is believed to be around 25%, or one-third of Japan's construction sealant market use. In the United States, MS sealants have been used primarily for industrial applications ; construction use is still in the developmental stage.
This article looks at the changing sealants market and presents a brief history of the growth of MS sealants in the Japanese construction sealants market. It highlights the chemistry of silyl-terminated polyether and provides comparative test results for MS sealants and other leading sealants. It also assesses the significance of these test results for a construction sealant segment that requires well-balanced properties, product effectiveness and environmental friendliness.Note de contenu : - Growth of Japan's construction joint sealants
