Specific advantages and disadvantages of each of them have been extensively discussed in the literature. recently, the practical interest in these materials started growing again owed to intensive search for alternative "Out-of-autoclave" manufacturing technologies by the aircraft manufacturers. This paper first briefly reviews three primary approaches to producing 3D reinforcements for composites (stitching, Z-pinning, and using unitary 3D textile preforms). The discussion is focused on principal benefits and shortcomings of each of these approaches. Then, we analyse in a greater detail the method of 3D weaving in general and its two distinct types, 3D interlock weaving and 3D orthogonal non-crimp weaving, individually. The very different fiber architectures, although the distinctions are rarely made and both fabric types are commonly categorized as "3D woven fabrics". Further on, those major distinctions in the fiber architectures of the two types of 3D woven fabrics are converted into dramatically different properties of resulting composite. Specific comparative test data for carbon fiber composites reinforced with 3D orthogonal non-crimp weaves, 3D interlock weaves and plied 2D plain weaves illustrate this point on various in-plane and out-of-plane mechanical properties of mutually comparable composites. A summary of recent efforts in industrial manufacturing of 3D orthogonal non-crimp woven preforms using various high-modulus, brittle (like ceramic andpitch carbon) fibers complete the paper.
