Kallenberger, Auteur Année de publication : 1991 Article en page(s) : p. 93-109 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Various testing methods have been explored for the evaluation of the flame resistance of leather, but much further investigation is steel needed. Preliminary historical and descriptive background for the two primary flame-resistance test methods on leathers treated with various flame-retardant chemicals. First the test methods must be addressed in terms of their advantages and limitations.
Flame/glow retardance depends upon the disruption of the burning process. Four general mechanisms (thermal, coating, gas, chemical) have been proposed to explain the means by which chemicals retard flaming. The flammability of leather must be tested in order to demonstrate compliance with governing regulation in automobile, aircraft and upholstery applications as well as to show the consumer that leather is safe. The two major test methods chosen for this application are the vertical-flame test and the oxygen-index test. The oxygen-index-test method has been developed to minimize operator variation, and to make possible more reliable comparisons of test data from other sources and even comparisons against other materials.

Test methods associated with leather longevity are valuable for any leathers where long-term durability is important. The 'Introduction' of this paper presents an historical review of research concerning the mechanisms involved in leather deterioration, with an emphasis on deterioration connected to atmospheric pollutants. Also presented are the results of experiments evaluating the effects of nitrogen dioxide exposures to test leathers and possible applications using such exposures in the testing of leathers for long-term use. Titre : Flame resistance of leather Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : Kadir Dönmez, Auteur ; W. E. Kallenberger, Auteur Année de publication : 1992 Article en page(s) : p. 1-19 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Américain (ame) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Several commercial flame retardants were applied to leather, and then the leathers were tested by ALCA method E50, and by the Oxygen-Index Test Method. Critical factors which would be expected to affect the flame resistance of leather directly were studied also. Various type of fatliquors were examined. The method of application of the flame retardant was tested by dipping the leather in or spraying it with these materials. A broad spectrum of flame retardants was studied so that most theoretical mechanisms of flame resistance would be examined. The numerical results of the flame-resistance tests have been evaluated statistically in order to rank the effectiveness of the various flame retardants and process variations. This study should help to further the objective in leather manufacture of minimizing destruction when exposed to flame. Although there are official methods in use for determination of fat content in leather, there are no standard test methods for fat content determination in raw or cured hides. Two basic fat extraction methods have been studied and findings are presented.
