Tannage Résumé : The adsorption of chromium (III) from a tanning wastewater on a kaolinite was studied. Simultaneously, adsorptions of sodium, of chloride and of sulphate were analysed. Tests were carried out using solutions with a chromium (III) content ranging between 0.62-38.27 mmol/L. These solutions were prepared by dilution of the original wastewater without changing the ration of their constituents. The solutions before each adsorption test and the equilibrium solutions were characterised by chemical analysis, by X-ray diffraction, by scanning electron microscopy and by surface chemical analysis using an electron microprobe. The results obtained permitted us to determine the principal physico-chemical aspects of the adsorption of chromium (III) on kaolinite. Monomeric and polymeric species of chromium (III) were detected in the tannin gwastewater and in each of the solutions prepared from the original wastewater. The adsorption of chromium (III) rose steeply at low equilibrium concentrations and showed negligible changes at high equilibrium concentrations. The maximum chromium (III) adsorption determined was 0.108 meq/g of kaolinite over the concentration range studied. The Langmuir equation was used to quantify the chromium (III) adsorption. It was determined that d(001) spacing and crystal size of kaolinite changed with the chromium content, whereas, the changes of clay texture were minimal after each adsorption. Finally, it was established that the presence of chromium (III) was not homogeneous in the kaolinite bulk. Titre : Chromium(III) adsorption on smectite from a tanning wastewater Type de document : texte imprimé Auteurs : C. Volzone, Auteur ; E. L. Tavani, Auteur Année de publication : 1995 Article en page(s) : p. 148-152 Note générale : Bibliogr. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Adsorption of chromium(III) on a smectite from a tanning wastewater was studied. Similarly adsorptions of sodium, chloride and sulphate were analyzed. Tests were carried out with solutions with a chromium(III) content ranging between 0.62-31.20 mmole/1. The method used to develop this work covered the characterization of the solution and of the smectite before and after each test. Solutions were characterized by chemical analyses and by visible spectrophotometry. The original smectite and smectites after each adsorption test were characterized by chemical analyses, by X-ray diffraction, by scanning electron microscopy and by surface chemical analysis via an electron microprobe. The results allowed us to determine the principal physicochemical characteristics of the chromium(III) adsorption on smectite. Monomeric chromium(III° was detected in the tanning wastewater and in each of the solutions prepared from the original solution. Adsorptions of sodium, chloride and sulphate were negligible for tests performed with low concentration solutions. Such behaviour changed with the increase of the prepared solution concentrations. The maximum adsorptions determined were : 0.81 mmole of chromium(III)/g of smectite ; 0.30 mmole of sodium/g of smectite ; 0.30 mmole of chloride/g of smectite and 0.15 mmole of sulphate/g of smectite. Finally, the Langmuir equation was used in order to quantify the chromium(III) adsorption.
