Résumé : |
Waterborn epoxy resin emulsions can be used for coating concrete surfaces and for anticorrosion primers on pretreated steel with excellent results. One of the limiting factors for their application is that emulsions, as metastable systems, have only a limited shelf-life. However, detailed information on the length of the shelf-life, and how it can be best determined and influenced has so far not been available. In this paper, different methods to monitor both the chemical and the physical stability of emulsions were evaluated, and their relevancy to practical applications established. The influence of parameters like the storage conditions or the structure of the epoxy resin was investigated. It is shown that stored at temperatures between 5 °C and 30 °C epoxy resin emulsions are perfectly stable for well over a year. Outside this temperature range, however, the stability declines rapidly. Practical suggestions for applicators to check the quality of emulsions are given. |
