The availability of these products changes as new active ingredients become available and as other products are considered usuitable on environmental and health and safety grounds (often prohibited by legislation in specific countries). As a result of legislation limiting the content of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in leather, fungicides based on substituted benzothiazole activities such as 2-(thiocyanomethyltio)-benzothiazole (TCMTB) were introduced and became more widely used. This paper reports the synthesis of chloro methylthiocyanate (CMTC), which is used as an intermediate for synthesis of TCMTB. Langues : Anglais (eng) Index. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Previously fungal attack in the leather industry has been prevented by using pentachlorophenol, but its use is no longer acceptable due to the possibility of the formation of chlorinated dibenzodioxine a poisonous compound. 2-(Thiocyanomethyltio)-benzothiazole (TCMTC), which is a currently used replacement is insoluble in water, and therefore has to be applied as an emulsion to wet blue leather.
This paper reports on the synthesis and formulation of TCMTB. Cuirs et peaux -- ConservationIndex. décimale : 675 Technologie du cuir et de la fourrure Résumé : Preservatives are essential in the leather industry in particular to protect wet tanned and crust leather against mould damage. Preservative selection is made on the basis of ecological and toxicological aspects, statutory requirements, official regulations and their effectiveness and cost. Until legislation restricted the use of pentachlorophenol (PCP), phenolics were the predominant wet blue fungicides, but afterwards Busan 30L (Buckman Laboratories) was widely adopted in the industry. The active ingredient of Busan 30L is 2-(thiocyanomethyl)-thiobenzothiazole (TCMTB). This paper reports the synthesis of bromochloromethane (BCM) which is an important intermediate for the synthesis of TCMTB. The process which we have developed is simple and offers cleaner, low-waste technology for the synthesis of BCM using non-toxic and non-hazardous raw materials.
