This can lead them to choose to make such products themselves. The aim of this work was therefore to analyse recipes for eye makeup and makeup removal products, as well as eyelash and eye contour care products. We collected recipes for do-it-yourself products found on blogs and social media (YouTube channels, Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram and TikTok) in French and English and then analyse their composition as well as how practical it is to make these recipes. We compiled and studied 275 recipes for products that can be used in or around the eye (periocular area). This work has shown that the quantities of the various ingredients are very imprecise, that the proposed substances are not suitable for the intended use and that the preservation of the finished products is not sufficiently guaranteed. The results obtained suggest that recipes for products intended for use in the eye or in the periocular area are not safe to use and that their use is likely to have relatively serious consequences. The easiest way is of course to cover the skin with foundations to hide those unattractive features of skin ageing. But besides this use of camouflage, there is more which can be done. To understand how to improve or preserve the youthful appearance of the skin we need to know about its underlying biology.
The skin is composed basically of three layers: the subcutaneous adipose tissue, the dermis and the epidermis, which protects the body from the environment. Wrinkles only develop in the dermis and epidermis. Because of this, it is important to keep these tissues in a juvenile state.
The dermis is a very strong and resilient tissue, which is responsible for the skin’s firmness and elasticity as well as its hydration. You can think of it in terms of a piece of leather as that is what it actually is; a tightly packed protein mesh consisting mainly of collagen,1 which is responsible for the firmness together with elastin, which is responsible for the elasticity. This tissue is supplemented by moisture-retaining molecules such as hyaluronic acid and proteoglycans.
The epidermis is even stronger than the dermis and is held together by a huge network of keratin that forms interconnections between the cells of the upper epidermis.
It is easy to understand that the firm and elastic skin we had in our childhood requires sufficient quantities of the important components and that any decrease in these, e.g. in collagen and elastin, will affect the restoring potential of the skin. You can readily observe this in real life: if you pinch the skin of a child on the back of their hand, you will see that the skin retracts immediately when you let it go. In contrast, when you do the same to a person aged 80 years and older, this can take up to a minute or even longer.
Wrinkles appear at regions where the dermal proteins collagen and elastin are less dense and where the connectivity of the dermis with the epidermis is weakened. This does not happen by chance but is the result of continuous repeated mechanical forces acting on the skin. The first mechanical forces that do this are involved in movement and as a result, the very first wrinkles we have are on the joints of our fingers and palms that are already there when we are born. So, whatever moves will cause wrinkles to develop and therefore our facial expressions will make wrinkles appear on our face sooner or later.

PolyphénolsLes polyphénols constituent une famille de molécules organiques largement présente dans le règne végétal. Ils sont caractérisés, comme l’indique le nom, par la présence d'au moins deux groupes phénoliques associés en structures plus ou moins complexes, généralement de haut poids moléculaire. Ces composés sont les produits du métabolisme secondaire des plantes.
Les polyphénols prennent une importance croissante, notamment grâce à leurs effets bénéfiques sur la santé. En effet, leur rôle d’antioxydants naturels suscite de plus en plus d'intérêt pour la prévention et le traitement du cancer, des maladies inflammatoires, cardiovasculaires et neurodégénératives. Ils sont également utilisés comme additifs pour les industries agroalimentaire, pharmaceutique et cosmétique
"Ils ont tous en commun la présence d'un ou plusieurs cycles benzéniques portant une ou plusieurs fonctions hydroxyles". La désignation "polyphénols" est consacrée par l'usage et, alors qu'elle ne devrait concerner que les molécules portant plusieurs fonctions hydroxyle phénolique, elle est habituellement utilisée pour l'ensemble de ces composés.
Les polyphénols naturels regroupent donc un vaste ensemble de substances chimiques comprenant au moins un noyau aromatique, portant un ou plusieurs groupes hydroxyle, en plus d’autres constituants. Il y a quatre principales familles de composés phénoliques : les acides phénoliques (catéchol, acide gallique, acide protocatéchique), les flavones, l'acide chlorogénique et les quinones. Ils peuvent aller de molécules simples, comme les acides phénoliques, à des composés hautement polymérisés, de plus de trente mille daltons, comme les tanins (acide tannique).
Les polyphénols sont communément subdivisés en phénols simples, acides phénoliques et coumarines, en naphtoquinones, en stilbénoïdes (deux cycles en C6 liés par deux atomes de carbone), en flavonoïdes, isoflavonoïdes et anthocyanes, et en formes polymérisées : lignanes, lignines, tanins condensés. Ces squelettes carbonés de base sont issus du métabolisme secondaire des plantes, élaborés par la voie du shikimate.
Les polyphénols sont présents dans diverses substances naturelles : sous forme d'anthocyanine dans les fruits rouges, le vin rouge (en relation avec les tanins, phénomène du "paradoxe français"), sous forme de proanthocyanidines dans le chocolat et le vin, d'acides caféoylquinique et féruloylquinique dans le café, de flavonoïdes dans les agrumes, et sous forme de catéchines comme le gallate d'épigallocatéchine dans le thé vert, de quercétine dans les pommes, les oignons, le vin rouge, etc.
D'après une étude réalisée avec des volontaires via Internet, les sources alimentaires de polyphénols sont principalement le café (36,9 %), le thé — vert ou noir — (33,6 %), le chocolat pour son cacao (10,4 %), le vin rouge (7,2 %) et les fruits (6,7 %)18. Dark circles and bags under the eyes are a common and universal aesthetic concern, which affects both men and women, regardless of age and ethnic origin. Although they are not of concern in terms of their effects on health, these conditions can be embarrassing and affect quality of life. They influence the overall appearance of the face, making it look tired, sad and older. They are therefore of significant cosmetic concern, especially for women.
The aetiology of dark circles and bags under the eyes is complex and multi-factorial. It combines intrinsic factors, such as ethnic origin or heredity, and extrinsic or lifestyle-related factors such as fatigue, lack of sleep, stress, smoking, excess alcohol consumption, hormonal changes, diseases, infections, allergies, etc.
Physiologically-speaking, there are the two main causes behind the appearance of dark circles and bags under the eyes: microcirculation and hyperpigmentation.
Microcirculation, or superficial microvascularisation in the eye area, is conducive to blood stagnation (or congestion) and dilatation, and is responsible for oedema, which is characterised by the collection of fluid in the tissue. A recent study showed an increase in dilatation of the blood vessels and the number of capillaries by videocapillaroscopy in subjects with persistent under-eye dark circles.1 These disorders are believed to be exacerbated by inflammation of the eye area.
Other secondary causes have also been described. The thin, transparent skin in the eye area could contribute to the visual appearance of dark circles as dilatation of the blood and hyperpigmentation can be seen more easily. In effect, compared to the rest of the face, the eyelid dermis contains less collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans.
The anatomy of the eye area itself is a contributing factor, as the bone structure can create a shadow effect. An effect which may be further accentuated by age-related or chronic photodamage-related skin slackening.
Oxidative stress could also play a role aggravating the appearance of dark circles, as blood vessel dilatation can lead to the release of heme and other metabolites into the tissue. Under oxidative stress, this leads to cytotoxic and proinflammatory effects, which are likely to exacerbate vasodilatation and hyperpigmentation.
Finally, bags are characterised even more by fluid collection and protrusion of fatty tissue in particular, which may be made worse by weakening of the septum as we age.
This article presents the studies that demonstrated the biological activity of avocado extract with high polyphenol content. This active ingredient, produced from avocado cake by extraction, comes in liquid form.
The effect of avocado polyphenols has been demonstrated by various in vitro biological models on the causes behind the formation of dark circles and bags under the eyes.
