Résumé : |
To guide the development of mar resistant coatings, new test instruments and test methods are under development. The efforts seem to have begun from two points: first indentation and scratching for studying wear, and second atomic force microscopy. Several of these micro- and nano-scale methods were compared by testing a series of hydroxy-functional acrylic/melamine-formaldehyde coatings having a wide range of mar resistance. A Fischer-scope H100' was used to do micro-scale instrumented indentation, a Triboscope' was used to do nano-indentation and nano-scratching, and a prototype micro-scale scratch tester was used to do scratch tests. Universal hardness, creep rate and residual indentation depth were self-correlated. Mar resistance was best when universal hardness was lowest. Micro-scratching was found to reveal qualitative differences that correlated with mar resistance, including resistance to cracking during scratching. |
