However, the generally presence of formaldehyde greatly restricts the widespread application of amino resins. In this study, furfural, an organic compound derived from biomass material, was used to substitute for formaldehyde in the synthesis of melamine resin based on an alkaline-acid procedure. The as-synthesized formaldehyde-free melamine resin (MRf) showed excellent performances in leather processing. FTIR and 13C-NMR were used to characterize the chemical structure of MRf. The particle size as well as zeta potential were also determined. The retanning performances of MRf indicated that the overall performances of MRf are comparable to conventional formaldehyde contained melamine resin (MR) and commercial melamine resin (CMR). In particular, the thickness of the leather retanned by MRf was enhanced around 10.33%, which is significantly higher than that of controls MR (6.16%) and CMR (5.94%). Color measurements showed that MRf imparted leather with higher dark intensity. This present work demonstrated that furfural could be a potential candidate to replace formaldehyde in the production of formaldehyde-free melamine resin. Vitamine D -- SynthèseIndex. décimale : 668.5 Parfums et cosmétiques Résumé : Givaudan Active Beauty has developed an ingredient derived from Persicaria tinctoria, a botanical species of the buckwheat family, with the purpose of replicating the positive effects of sunlight. This innovative extract is designed to promote well-being and stimulate tanning without the need for actual sun exposure. Its main focus is to address the mood changes that occur during seasonal transitions, particularly in winter, when there is limited sun exposure and lower levels of vitamin D3. Givaudan conducted extensive research using in vitro models of keratinocytes and melanocytes that were co-cultured and ex vivo models to evaluate the pro-pigmenting activity. β-endorphin and oxytocin were quantified in the culture medium of keratinocytes stimulated with the extract. Vitamin D3 production was measured after the grinding of skin explants treated for several days with Persicaria tinctoria extract.
Finally, clinical trials were conducted to demonstrate the extract’s ability to enhance mood and improve skin health. Corroborating the hypothesis that the extract can act as a “molecular sun”, the results demonstrated its ability to significantly increase melanin content up to +66% in skin explants in comparison with placebo cream. In keratinocytes stimulated with the extract, β-endorphins increased by +43% and oxytocin by +229%. Vitamin D3 production rose significantly to 86.5%. A positive effect on mood was confirmed in vivo in a panel of volunteers who fill specific questionnaires and said they observed a significant reduction of tiredness and an increase of affectionate mood state, leading to an overall improvement of low mood.
In summary, Persicaria tinctoria extract offers myriad of sun-mimicking benefits including tanning activity, mood-enhancement and vitamin D3 stimulation. This can help address vitamin D deficiency and support overall skin and body health, particularly in regions and seasons with limited sunlight.Note de contenu : - MATERIALS AND METHODOLOGY : Evaluating pro-pigmenting activity in vitro - Evaluating pro-pigmenting activity on skin explants using Fontana Masson's staining - Enhanced positive mood and well-being : Quantifying beta-endorphin release in keratinocytes - Enhancement of positive mood and well-being : Quantifying oxytocin release in keratinocytes - Enhanced positive mood and well-being : Quantifying vitamin D3 in skin explants - Clinical evaluation of the mood-boosting properties of Persicaria tinctoria extract

Tannage organiqueIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Diethanolamine, epichlorohydrin (ECH), and lysine were used to change the traditional synthesis route to address the formaldehyde emission issue of melamine resin (MR), and a novel waterborne MR retanning agent with ultralow formaldehyde content (MUF) was finally obtained. The structure of MUF was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, 13C nuclear magnetic resonance, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and its retanning performances in wet-blue and wet-white leathers were thoroughly investigated. Results showed that the formaldehyde content of MUF was 28.05 mg/kg, which was greatly lower than that of traditional MR (3550.23/2543.45 mg/kg), and the formaldehyde contents of chrome- and TWLZ-tanned leathers retanned by MUF were only 12.68 and 8.98 mg/kg, respectively. The thickening rates of MUF-retanned leather were up to 13.40% (chrome-tanned leather) and 9.58% (TWLZ-tanned leather), and MUF showed a satisfying overall performance in retanning leather. MUF is highly promising in practical application owing to its ultralow formaldehyde content, excellent stability in aqueous solution, and satisfactory retanning behaviors. ThermogravimétrieIndex. décimale : 675.2 Préparation du cuir naturel. Tannage Résumé : Amino resins used in the leather retanning process are condensation products of formaldehyde which makes such resins objectionable due to environmental hazards. Due to the carcinogenic effects of formaldehyde, there is a growing demand to produce formaldehyde-free leather. This work involves the synthesis of formaldehyde free melamine resins for producing environment friendly leather with improved retanning properties and thermal stability. A series of resins was produced by condensation of glyoxal and melamine at varied mole ratios. Stability and water solubility was achieved by sulfonation with aniline 2,5 disulfonic acid at varied degrees of sulfonation. Resins were evaluated to measure the viscosity trends in series.
Synthesised resins were studied for their comparative retanning properties in comparison with a commercial melamine resin as control. Mechanical properties like tensile strengths tear strengths, and elongation at break were measured and found to be improved. Similarly, the organoleptic properties were also evaluated and found to be better than for the control. Retanned pieces of leather were examined by SEM and tested for free formaldehyde content. The optimal resin was subjected to analysis by FTIR, TGA and molecular weight determination. Effluents collected from retanning baths were tested for pollution load efficiency. The results of the study confirmed that the prepared resins were supportive in producing formaldehyde-free leather with improved mechanical and organoleptic properties. The thermal stability of the resulting resins and pollution load efficiency was also found to be improved.Note de contenu : - EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE : Chemicals and apparatus - Preparation of aniline 2,5 disulfonic acid modified melamine glyoxal resins
