everal base coat/clear coat systems with high-quality PU clear coats for automotive finishing were tested in order to prove the influence of the clear coat type (one-pack and two-pack), the application (water-borne and solvent-borne) and the formulation (different hardener combinations) on the environmental etch resistance. Exposure was carried out using the ADF test (acid dew and fog test) which is a new accelerated artificial weathering test including the simulation of acid atmospheric precipitation. The known better appearance durability of the two-pack clear coats compared to the one packs in harsh environmental conditions could be confirmed in the new weathering test. The water-borne clears proved to be just as good as the solvent-borne ones. The coating formulation showed a strong influence on the weatherability. |
