This work is based on an outgrowth of polymerization research aimed at producing a thioglycolate telechelic polymer, that is, a polymer with a thioglycolate ether at each end. However, it demonstrates the simplicity and ease generally required of a potentially commercially viable process for production of a corrosion inhibitor. Free radical synthesis of styrene/thioglycolate adducts shows them to be outstanding corrosion inhibitors either as the sodium salt or the non-ionic ethylene glycol half ester. As this might be a cheap, fast and easily performed synthesis, this route could lead to a commercially viable familiy of new corrosion inhibitor structures. |
